    Hi there,

Note: we thought maybe this was an issue with WP Courseware at first, so we contacted their support explaining the problem, however, they’re also stumped and suggested we contact Yoast to see if you folks had any insight.

The problem: On our client’s main courses page (which we’ve designated a specific page in the admin to be the “main” page with the courses shortcode – so it’s basically a regular WordPress page) https://affirmativecouch.com/courses/, is not picking up the meta description that we’ve added to that page (using Yoast).

We also tested adding a description to the meta box under “Categories” in the Yoast settings, but that had no effect either.

We are using a custom template to display courses. The course meta description is showing up fine and so is the meta description for all of the categories. It’s just that main page that we can’t get to show a meta description.

    Hello @jvmedia

Thanks for reaching out about the meta description on your course archive page. Since WP Courseware is a premium plugin, I can’t test this. Does the meta description show when you switch to a default WordPress theme with only WP Courseware and Yoast SEO plugins active?

If you deactivating plugins on your live site is impractical, I recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site.

If you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts.

Hi there – We have tried viewing the site with the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. When only the WP Courseware, Advanced Custom Fields, and Yoast is installed, we’re still seeing the following notice on that particular page: <!– Admin only notice: this page does not show a meta description because it does not have one, either write it for this page specifically or go into the [Yoast SEO – Settings] menu and set up a template. –>

Unfortunately, switching to a default WordPress theme also doesn’t fix it. Same message appears and the Meta Description tag is missing.

Thanks for following up, @jvmedia. Do you need Advanced Custom Fields for WP Courseware to work? Do you see the meta description when it’s disabled?

Technically, no. We tried it on the default WordPress theme and added the shortcode to a block temporarily and got the same result – meta description tag is simply missing on that page.

Sadly, I’m unfamiliar with WP Courseware and can’t troubleshoot since it’s a premium plugin. We have a help article that may provide some more pointers – I’m not seeing a meta description in the head section in the source code of my site

Hi there – I may suggest it might be an actual bug or conflict at this point. I checked the link to the article you posted and the particular template file associated with the page that’s got the missing description meta does have the wp_head call. We also have a general description in the Yoast settings. It also makes no sense that actual course pages show the description fine. We’re just totally stumped by this one.

    Hey @jvmedia,

    Thank you for your reply.

We’re almost out of ideas too if the same happens with a default theme. The wp_head call is there otherwise the other Yoast output wouldn’t be present too…

Maybe a few ideas to test:
    – Did you also test if you only activate Yoast SEO and no other plugin, if the meta description then shows?
    – If you were to create a new draft page with the same shortcode block on it, does the meta description you’d write to test it on that page show up?
    – If you were to reset the indexables using the steps in this help article just check if that helps.

    Looking forward to your reply.

Just wanted to update this thread that if you have WP Courseware and Yoast on a site, you can navigate to “Yoast Seo–>Settings–>Content Types–>Courses” and scroll down to the Courses Archive section, you can set the meta description there.
