I was helping a friend with his site. It’s hosted at 1and1 which has a strange and seemingly unique option of pointing the home page to a folder. His WordPress site was pointing to a blank folder so I tried pointing the files to the folder where the files lived within the WordPress interface. Unfortunately I didn’t make a copy of the database, and the site disappeared. The host was so incompetent when I asked for a database restore they only restored the ht docs, then too much time went by for them to correct their error.

I can get a login screen at the url for the blank directory, but once I log in I just get 404 errors. I can access the sql database and wonder if there’s anyway to fix this mess.

I figured it out, in the sql table wp_options there’s two lines in there to adjust directory links. Now the trouble is setting up this stupid server to use the correct directory. I highly recommend against 1and1 hosting!
