I haven’t had this issue before, but suddenly some emails sent from my WordPress site (via Mailgun) to a groups.io message board are bouncing. At first, they just randomly weren’t being sent, but now I’m also getting an error in both Mailgun and groups.io.

The email is being sent to [email protected]. But it’s rejecting these messages with the following error:

Non-member [email protected] attempted to send message “A new trip was added to the website”, via email

    Mailgun’s error says this:
“message”: “5.1.1 Your email address, [email protected], is not subscribed to that group. To subscribe, send an email to [email protected], or visit https://mnrovers.groups.io/g/members”,

I wrote to Mailgun and they said:

In checking the logs, it appears that the bounce messages started when the sender changed from [email protected] to [email protected]. Since the bounce message from the recipient server indicates that there is a subscription issue, that could be what the cause is. We recommend reaching out to the recipient’s server for more detailed information, as they are the ones that are bouncing the message.

I’ve also reached out to groups.io – but I noticed this plugin was updated recently, so thought that might be the cause.

    Hi @jodzeee

looks like the message from Mailgun is being sent from [email protected] address? And that address is not permitted to post the message in your group.

If that’s a simple change from info@ to postmaster@ you could check your Notification -> Settings -> Carriers -> Email settings and make sure the FROM setting is correctly set. Also, it might be worth checking the Mailgun plugin if you’re using it if the sender over there is correct.

Otherwise, we didn’t change anything around email submission in the past few versions.

I have no idea where the bounce stuff is coming from.

The Mailgun plugin from address is set to
    [email protected]

The Notifications from address is set to this (it’s an address that is subscribed to the egroup):
    Trips Director <[email protected]>

    I don’t have anything set in Carriers, should I? Here’s a screnshot:

That looks good @jodzeee. I don’t think this is something our plugin does. I’d inspect the details of how Mailgun is sending those emails, looks like they are malformed by Mailgun for some reason.

Any reason it would have changed when the plugin was updated?

    Groups.io said:

It looks like a change was made to how those messages were created on the sender side. Previously, the messages had a From line of “From: “Rovers Trips” <[email protected]>” which matched the [email protected] member. Now the messages are being sent with the From line of “From: Minnesota Rovers Outdoors Club <[email protected]>” which doesn’t match any members.

Can you explain to me why it’s coming from [email protected] (what I have set in Mailgun) instead of [email protected] (which is what I have configured in the Notifications plugin)?

Maybe I should just try rolling Notifications back to see if that helps?

    Thank you,
    Jodi

Our plugin is only one of the layers that the email comes through. If that’s the issue, maybe it would be just a matter of defining this email and name in the empty plugin settings from your last screenshot?

I think your flow broke at the time our update was released it was just a coincidence. We didn’t update anything that could affect email submission settings.
