    I’m having trouble with merge variables intermittently ‘leaking’ into notification pages and customer emails. {order_number} is never evaluating and {customer_name} evaluates in the email subject and account pages but not in the body of emails.

    I have reduced the installation to WordPress and Woocommerce running Twenty Twenty (all latest versions) and it’s still occurring.

    Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Hi there!

    Could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”.? Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

    The thing I’m most interested in seeing is whether you have any kind of caching service active on this website. If you have any insight on this that you could share with us, please let us know!

    Thanks for the (very) swift response. I’ll post the status, I’m currently chasing my tail on another job. I wanted to retest without plugins (and the 5.2.1 update). Back soon ??

    Oh, no caching at all

    What can you tell me about where you are using the merge variables? Who/what are they populated by?

    Thread Starter Anthony Builden

    (@user29054)

    I’m testing them in the Order on-hold email. The Woocommerce part(order details etc works OK but inserting the merge variables in the additional content text field is, at present, resulting in {order_number} working but {customer_name} and {customer_first_name} not working

    In the webpage /checkout/order-received/ inserted through the Payment Method Instruction field none of these three work.

    Don’t work as in they output the literal, eg {order_number} rather than the value

    Hello @user29054,

    I am not fully sure I understand the problem here. Are you using any 3rd-party extension to achieve what you described earlier? Could you please explain a bit more? Getting a bit more information on this issue should help us figure out what’s going on here.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.

    No, as I say, I reduced the install to the default theme and only woocommerce as plugin.

    I am using email variables as per this article; https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/automated-follow-up-emails-docs/email-variables-and-merge-tags/

    Only the {order_number} appears in the email not {customer_name} or {customer_first_name} , nothing appears in the payment method instructions (As in “Please quote {order_number}

    Hi @user29054,

    Thank you for the clarification. You are using one of our premium plugins and we are unable to provide support for this plugin here.

    Please contact us at WooCommerce.com > My Account > Support. You may need to create an account before you can access that page.

    Please include a link to this forum thread, so that we can keep track of what’s already been done.

    We will be able to help you further there.

    That would explain why they are not working, I do not have the follow-up extension installed, I mistakenly thought these variables were part of core.

    Thanks for clarifying.

    Just one follow up. There is an implication that there are email placeholders in core; {site_title} is obviously one as it’s in the default Subject. I don’t seem to be able to find a list of these, can you point me at the documentation. Thanks again.

    There is no specific documentation for the available email placeholders. If you simply hover over the tooltip(?) icon then it will show you the list of available placeholders. Here is a screenshot: https://d.pr/i/7DN7EK

    Available placeholders: {site_title}, {site_address}, {site_url}, {order_date}, {order_number}, {order_billing_full_name}

    I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.

    Thanks!
