• I’m using Form 05 or at least that’s how its listed inside the settings within Optin Forms.

This is my first time using this specific plugin, however I’ve never had this issue with any other Optin plugin.

Mail Chimp name “Field Tag” is FNAME and it works every single time. However, I noticed that within your code the name field is always just “name”…it won’t capture the name in Mail Chimp….but it will capture the email field.

Soooo…I changed the line for the input field to fname in this file: optin-forms/includes/functions-forms.php I can see the code in firebug and it appears as the code is getting picked up…but Mail Chimp tech suppor says that its not transmitting the correct merge code.

Am I missing something or a file where the code needs to be changed. I have an active Optin Pop I’m using as well and that seems to be fine in our site.

    Let us know…Thanks again

  • Hi Rick,

actually, the name field is identified as FNAME within Optin Forms ??

If MailChimp is selected and saved as the email solution, the name field will carry this identifier. See file wp-content/plugins/optin-forms/includes/functions.php. Line #241 returns FNAME if MailChimp is selected.

There are three scenarios when the name field is identified as “name”:

    1. If AWeber is selected as the email solution
    2. If GetResponse is selected as the email solution
    3. If there is no email solution selected

I’m not sure how you would end up getting “name” as the name field identifier, but I’m guessing it’s the third scenario.

Many sites using Optin Forms and MailChimp are collecting names and email addresses without problems, so I would change the code back and try configuring the email solution first.

If, for any reason, it doesn’t end up working as suspected, let me know and I can always take a look on your website and find out where it’s going wrong ??

No, actually the field name is being identified as FNAME because I changed it manually within the php file on line #241. Prior to that it was Name and it didn’t work.

I have “My email solutions is” selected as “Mail Chimp” and we have the correct “Form Action URL” set up correctly. (Mail Chimp has verified and confirmed this).

If we use their simple code it captures the name and email address with no problems…from our website.

We’ve changed line 241 back to what it original had before we modified it and mail chimp has done test on it and “nothing” is captured.

I counted roughly 27 instances where your plugin clients “are having issues” with the fields populating and merging with Mail Chimp. Although you may have a ton of people who are not having this issue..doesn’t mean their isn’t a problem. I’ve been using Ninja Pop Ups for years and I’ve never had an issue with their fields merging…however..they have a ton of complaints as well.

If you’d like to double check our work…I can give you access to our site so you can double check. Thanks again

    Hi Rick,

As I’ve said before, I’m perfectly happy to take a look at your website and help out in any way I can. But you need to give a developer a chance to identify a problem with your installation and provide a solution for that problem.

I’m extremely dedicated to providing free support for this free plugin, and I believe my engagement in these support forums proves how much of my time and dedication goes into helping users out.

In my last reply, I have tried to explain what the code of the plugin does. It’s been tested and it works. It’s used by other Mail Chimp users, and it works! If it doesn’t behave that way on your WordPress website, there is a problem and we can work together to fix it.

You claim there are roughly 27 instances where plugin clients are having issues with Mail Chimp. Are you talking about the amount of support threads in these forums? Because not all threads (if any) are related to the field issue you are experiencing.

Furthermore, I’m glad Ninja Pop Ups worked great for you. Are you aware of the fact that Ninja Pop Ups costs $21 and Optin Forms is completely free? It isn’t very fair to compare the two products, as I’m not charging any fees for use of this plugin. The support I offer to users of the plugin is completely free as well.

The last part of your comparison where you say “they have a ton of complaints as well” has really surprised me. I’m receiving tons of positive feedback for the plugin. I’ve got emails from users thanking me for creating a free optin plugin for WordPress.

If, by any chance, you are referring to 27 support threads, I would kindly request you to read those support threads. You may notice they aren’t complaints, but users seeking help with particular issues. And on each and every support thread, I have answered within hours. And if I couldn’t have come up with a solution right away, I didn’t stop until the issue was resolved.

I’m sorry for this rant, but your comment left me with an unrewarded feeling, like I’ve created a buggy product and didn’t care what it did to your website.

Feel free to send me your login details and I will help you out in any way that I can. You can use the contact form on our website.

I’ll send a request through your website.

    Thanks again

I’ve received your email and answered. Unfortunately, your username and password are not correct. I can’t seem to login to your website.

    Issue is fixed by email.

If anyone else is having this issue, please double check in MailChimp settings that your name field is not renamed.

    1. Click on Lists in your navigation menu.
    2. Select your list and click on Settings.
    3. Click on List fields and *|MERGE|* tags.
    4. Make sure that the namefield is called FNAME instead of NAME, LNAME or any other value.

    Marking this as resolved.
