Actually, it is working fine for me using the default WordPress theme so it seems the issue specific to the theme that you are using on your website, therefore, I need to access your website to see the markup generated by the theme.

As mentioned I am testing on a non public site.
I tried with Twenty Twenty theme and the display is indeed different. Although the vertical alignment of the search field and the magnifying glass is wrong there when you zoom to mobile view.

So apparently my problem of the search field partly being out of view is related to the theme I am using: Neve
Is there some general approach for moving it to the left?

There isn’t any general approach and is specific to the theme.
