• Just installed wordpress in a sub-directory on this client’s server, and am finding that all the links in the top menu lead to a dead end.

    https://sparrowtraps.net/wordpress/

When I mouse over the links, the correct address shows in the status bar in the bottom of the browser, but when I click the link it goes to a blank page with this at the top:

    https://sparrowtraps.net/wordpress/ /index.php https://www.sparrowtraps.net 184.53.49.255 404 StatCounter – Free Web Tracker and Counter –>

And what’s weird is, I haven’t even installed the statcounter plugin on this wordpress install. Statcounter IS installed on the current site at this domain, but not on my wordpress site!

  • Seems like it is returning 404 error and so redirecting to your home page.

    Because the links
    https://sparrowtraps.net/wordpress/buy/
    https://sparrowtraps.net/wordpress/sparrow-spookers/

does not contain anything, so they are returning 404 error.

Do you really have any files in the folder
    /wordpress/buy/ ?

“buy” is the name of the page, not a folder. If it’s trying to go to a folder and not a page, then it’s attempting to go to the wrong thing.

In your homepage your buy link is like this
    https://www.sparrowtraps.net/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=action&keywords=all

And in your new wordpress installation menu, you set the buy link lead to
    https://sparrowtraps.net/wordpress/buy/

So that’s why it is returning a 404 error.

You can keep the name as buy in the menu, but the link should be like the one in your first domain.

The link you referenced above is the link for the buy button on the currently-existing site. I am building the WordPress site in a sub-directory, and “buy” is the name of an actual page in the wordpress site, that’s what generates the word “Buy” in the menu, so it should go to the page. If you’ll notice, none of the other links are working either – and those links are all generated by pages I created on the wordpress site. It shouldn’t matter what the current site is doing, the WordPress site, existing in a sub-directory, should be independent of that.

I just went to my Permalink settings, changed them back to Default, and then back to Post Name, and now they’re working. Must have been a glitch.
