I made my first theme by editing the Twentyten theme. After I upgraded WP to 3.1 everything was back to where I started so it seems a pretty good idea to change the theme name after editing it to prevent such things from happening. Right?

I changed the style.css file. Result: The theme name has changed but I lost my main website navigation menu structure. This menu is still visible in ‘Appearance\menus’ but does not appear on the site.

I tried to change the theme folder name as well as the name info in the style.css but it gave me similar results.

How to prevent my main navigation menu from disappearing?
A different approach to changing theme names?

Is a site-wide find & replace a good idea? -> find: twentyten replace: myThemeName

First, you would probably be better-off creating a Child Theme to make modifications to TwentyTen, rather than creating a full derivative Theme from TwentyTen.

    Second:

From Dashboard -> Appearance -> Menus

I assume you see that your custom Menu is still saved (that’s good!), but: has it been assigned to the defined menu location for your Theme? Look in the upper left-hand corner, for the Menu Location dropdown list, and ensure that your custom Theme is selected.

(Sorry for the late reply, to many things going on at once)

You’re so right! I should have used child themes, will dive into that. But you know, it is my first WP encounter, you dive into it, start changing things to your liking till you reach the point of no return by means of: “I don’t want to start all over again!”

I had forgotten to assign the menu again. Damn that was easy, so close yet so far. Thx alot!
