• This has been an issue since July 2016, so is inclusive of all WP releases since that time.

When I edit my menu, some of the items are replaced with a blank item named “Custom Link,” with no content.

I created a test menu with several dozen menu items and sub-items. Everything looked perfect, except the “Home” link went blank, as described above. I removed and re-added the “Home” link, and then when I saved the menu, ALL items went blank.

I’ve tried going to a WP “TwentyFifteen” basic theme, disabling all my plugins, emptying the cache, logging out, clearing browser’s (Chrome 54.0.2840.71 m, Microsoft Edge 38.14393.0.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer 11.321.14393.0) cache, logging back in, but still…

Can you replicate the issue switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Sixteen) for a moment WITH ALL PLUGINS DEACTIVATED?

If all the above steps do not resolve the issue, then try MANUALLY updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Please read the Manual Update directions first.

Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups!

Will give it a go. Probably won’t be back until Tuesday or so. Please keep this thread live until then.

I actually had some time tonight. Went through the “extended manual update” as well. No go.

I temporarily changed to one of the “bad” menus. Notice, two items appear on the menu just below the header “In honor of the Space Shuttle Challenger” and “In Memoriam…”. If you hover over the top border of that bar, you will see mini-highlight placeholder boxes, that do nothing when you click on them.

When I “View page source” in FF, both items look like this:
    <li id=”menu-item-5195″ class=”menu-item menu-item-type- menu-item-object- menu-item-5195″>In Honor of the Space Shuttle Challenger…

    <li id=”menu-item-5196″ class=”menu-item menu-item-type- menu-item-object- menu-item-5196″>In Memoriam…

Except the tag, url is missing!

Yep. I have one menu that’s 90% correct, but when I try to add to it, it does something similar to the above.

I recommend asking in your theme’s dedicated support sub-forum for better results so its developers and users can help you with this:

It even happens on any of the OEM WordPress themes, too (TwentyFifteen, etc.)

    – Your browser can also help you identify JavaScript issues or conflicts. Do you have any Javascript errors in the console when looking at the editor page? This article can assist you in doing that diagnosis. – If you use any caching systems, like Cloudflare, clear those caches.

Yeah. Turned off the caching. Even went so far as to uninstall the plugins. Taking it down to the core. Still wonky.
