Since updating to WordPress v4.7.3 my main menu is not displaying, either at the top or bottom of the page. The mobile menu displays at the top of the page at all screen sizes except on a mobile device, when it doesn’t display at all.

The site uses a custom child theme running on the Twenty Eleven theme. I have not updated the Twenty Eleven theme from version 2.0 as concerned it may adversely affect the child theme.

I rarely use WordPress and constructed this site in 2012, so am no expert and my memory of its construction is a bit hazy now. I maintain hosting the site for legacy purposes only, but update WordPress for security reasons mainly.

Advice would be warmly appreciated. The site is: https://energybiographies.org

  • You should definitely update parent theme, see if that fixes your errors. I do see a lot of Javascript errors on your site. Updating parent theme might fix them.

The child theme’s purpose is exactly to allow you to update parent theme without losing custom changes you may have done inside child theme. So as long as your parent theme has no custom changes, updating it will work just fine.

What you can do, simply download your parent theme via FTP to your computer as a backup. Update parent theme on your website, and see how everything is working. If everything is fine, good. If something breaks, then you can delete parent theme and re-upload downloaded copy of the previous version.

It is a good idea to create a full backup of your website before making any changes.

Many thanks for your reply, ProjectArmy Support.

I did as you suggested and updated to the current Twenty Eleven theme. Nothing broke, all is fine, except that the menus are still not displaying correctly.

I have tried adding in a completely new menu from the dashboard, but it does not display at all.

All of the plugins are up to date and I’ve tried deactivating them all, with no effect on the menus.

    Any ideas?

I took a look at an archived copy of your website:
    https://web.archive.org/web/20160324034956/https://energybiographies.org/

It looks like your current website has different menu name. You CSS for the menu is tied to “#menu-global” ID. But your current website menu is set to “#menu-footer”. So you need to change menu name back to “Global” and that should generate correct CSS ID to bring back old styling. I did test it in Chrome, and it appeared to be working.

Try it and let me know.

Many thanks for your assistance, ProjectArmy Support.

I finally resolved the problem by re-registering the menus in the functions.php file (of the child theme) and re-specifying the menus under Appearance/Menus.

    Thank you.
