• I originally created my site using Weebly, only to find out my Ecwid-installed shopping cart was incompatible with Weebly, and therefore “invisible” to search engines.

    It was recommended that I rebuild my site using WordPress, which I did using the Customizr theme. Once I was finished, I needed to reroute my web address to my new WordPress design and have it no longer land on the Weebly design. I contacted iPage, who hosts my site, and their CS Rep made the switch for me yesterday.

    Last night I discovered some aspects of my WordPress design didn’t hold up when the switch was made. Some images were missing, my background was gone, etc. I was told to empty my cache but that wasn’t the problem. Since the problems seemed easy to fix I didn’t really pursue the reasons why my site didn’t transfer intact.

    This morning I set about plugging my images and background back in, etc. Then all of a sudden I realize the menu has disappeared from all of my pages – now my logo is very large and centered, when it used to be on the left with the horizontal menu to the right. I am positive the menu was there when the switch was made, but I cannot figure out what I was doing that would have had any effect on the menu.

    I didn’t make any corrections to my home page today and did not mess around with the menu at all. I was just re-loading images on other pages when I first noticed this. I went into the “Customize It” area for the home page and made sure my menu is still showing in navigation. All looks as it should, but I still cannot see it on my pages.

    I’m out of ideas – can anyone help me figure out what to tweak to get it back? Thanks!

    Okay – link didn’t work. This is one of those days…the site is https://www.fabswag.net

    This one may be a cache problem – tried pulling up the site not logged in as Admin, on another browser, and the menu shows up fine. Not sure why it would disappear in Admin mode like that, though. Odd.

    Updated to add: A new discovery: this problem happens when I alter the size of the pageview on my screen. When the page is in full-view mode, the menu displays just fine. I am also noticing that when the pageview is altered, my widget images spill into the main body of my page, and vice-versa.

    So the problem is that the elements in my website are not adjusting proportionately when the screen size changes.

    Does anyone have a fix? Thanks so much!

    Ah, now I see what the problem is! No fix needed. It’s working exactly as it should.

    Customizr has a “responsive” design, as do some other themes. When your screen size goes below a certain width, the menu “collapses” and you get a button to press instead. This ensures that the page is still easy to use on, say a phone.

    While your menu text could simply get smaller and smaller as the screen size reduces, in practice, on a phone this makes it unreadable — a horizontal display of the menu is no longer possible. So instead you get a button with a vertical display and readable text.

    This is a good site to see how your site looks on various devices.

    Thank you for the explanation. I see the button that drops the menu down now (smack forehead). Everything you’re saying makes sense, but the widget overlap issue still puzzles me. I haven’t encountered other websites where the information on screen starts to overlap other areas and jumble up just because the screen view is smaller. I’m worried someone viewing my site with a minimized screen will do what I just did and not realize if they maximize the screen the site becomes more legible. I’m thinking they might just decide my site is jacked up and not worth trying to navigate. (!)

    As more sites get responsive, more users will know what’s happening. An alternative is to replace the three bars with the word ‘menu’.

    An alternative is to replace the three bars with the word ‘menu’.

    Specifically: by editing class-header-menu.php and changing:

    <button type="button" class="btn btn-navbar" data-toggle="collapse" data-target=".nav-collapse">
