• Hello..
I am not sure what happened.. I have the website
theamericanquarterhorse.com and I was trying to put a “social media widget” on the site.in the the footer areas., I tried a couple from the wordpress directory page, and some didn’t seem to work. so I deleted them off and tried another till I found one that worked.–
    ‘social media widget standard”–
After I was done I looked at the site, and my menu was and is, totally gone!! the bar between the “theamericanquarterhorse” and “home” turned very skinny and the bar turned- color -changed to blue instead of black.
I checked and my menu still exists in the dashboard, and my pages still exist in the dashboard, but NO MENU is visible on the front end,. I tried going into the menu and re-saving the menu. still no menu on the front end. I checked my pages, and they are still “public” not private..
I cannot get my menu to show on the front end no matter what I try.. It does exsist. I went into appearance- customize – and the menu is still in there in the header area, just dont seem to have a header bar between–theamericanquarterhorse.com– and the “home” page title anymore and am not sure how to “find it and fix it”
.I deactivated the plugin, and removed it, and the blue space between–theamericanquarterhorse” and “home” disappeared, in fact that bar area totally disappeared between “theamericanquarterhorse: and :”home” where the menu was located..
in the settings my menu was located “on main”. I tried moving the menu to another location to see if that was the problem,, still no menu. I am using ocean theme..Any thoughts would be appreciated..
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    hello, I am back…
I got an email from the “ocean people” and here is what they said-
Hello, this is not the mobile menu but the Full Screen header style, go to the Header > General section of the customizer and select the Minimal header style, that will make appear the navigation :)-
However when I tried it I got the menu all “mushed” up in the American quarter horse headline. I talked to the 24×7 wordpress support people who said for a small amount they could fix it. I asked what the problem was, and they said a javascript conflict.. whatever that means..
Now I am wondering if it was the last plugin that I tried that caused the problem, or if it might have been one of the others that I tried and couldn’t get it to work the way I wanted, and I only noticed it when I had last plugin installed…
I have found a number of the plugins often don’t work the way they say.. It might be that I am a newbie, but then maybe they just don’t work well.
I do want to put a “social media” section on my web page, but now I am leary of having the problem re-occur. Anyone out there have any good ideas on how to go about that without using a defective plugin??? is there anykind of HTML code that would work??

Well first of all, are they going to fix the javascript problem?
If so, wait a moment with adding new plug-ins.
Once they are done I am willing to help add a social media plug-in.

Let me know when you are ready for this.

I am back, and sooooo unhappy..I had asked 24X7 wp support to work on things because I admit I am not a techie, but I do know somethings, but not this sort of problem. They quoted a reasonable price to fix the problem so I gave a very small down payment and said go ahead. Well I got an e-mail saying that everything was fixed and would I pay them the remainder! HA!
I went and checked it out, and I still DO NOT have any drop down menus on the front end, even though they show up in the back end as being there and being in drop down sequence.. I then looked closer and my sidebars which were working just fine were all messed up. I had put independent sidebars on all pages so that I could put different advertisement on each different page and they had been in place for quite a while and I had had NO problems with that plugin at all and it was working fine. My home page has NO sidebars whatsoever, I checked closer and some of the sidebars are static and some independent.. I tried it out by typing words in them to see if they repeated across pages. In the back end the static side bar was re-activated.. and the footer picture which used to be 2 horses facing each other– one was now facing the other way and one was stuck in the static sidebar, with some letters stuck underneath that I had blended in the footer bar as place holders.. The horses used to face each other–Small details, but if there is still underlying issues that I haven’t found yet, are they going to charge me further to fix what they messed up??
I had deliberately de-activated the static side bars, and some one took the time to re-activate them and type stuff into them.. but they must have missed some of the side bars as they are still independent.. I find that confusing why some pages are static and some are still independent, so wondering if there is still an issue somewhere.. what does everyone think?
I am not sure if the web page is working properly or not so I have not attempted to fix the problems with the sidebars myself.. I suspect it is not working properly as the dropdown menu shows in the back end but not on the front…
hmmm –afterwards I got to thinking I should have gotten hostgator to fix it as they are slightly cheaper, and since they are the host company maybe they would have done a better job..
At this time I do not plan on paying the remainder ( it is not that much, it is the principle that matters) until they make an attempt to fix the mess they made.. and if they “drop the ball” and wont fix it then what?? My concern is if there are still hidden issues hiding somewhere and I cant edit things properly myself..
    What does everyone think??

    Hi @nitehawk,

To be honest, I wouldn’t pay the remaining money. I would make screenshots are show them what errors/mistakes has came in after they tried to fix the menu.

If they aren’t willing to fix your menu in any case, then take a look if your hosting company can place a back-up which has been created just before they started trying to fix your menu.

If they first isn’t possible but the latter is, I am willing to help and re-create a working menu. How does that sound?

    Cheers.

I think I made the mistake of not getting hostgator to do a restore first thing.. 24×7 phoned this morning asking how things were, and I told them a mess and that I had sent them an email, it was polite but not pulling any punches..
This morning one of the bosses emailed me asking how it was going, and I simply re-sent the email complaining that it was a mess.
If it is not fixed properly this time, I will go in and change the password and tell them to forget it and pay hostgator to do a restore.. I had a problem with one of the techies at hostgator when I asked help to put my website online, he deleted the whole website off instead of working through the problem, which I was told “was a plugin. “—Like de-activate the plugin then instead of deleting the whole website off!! when this happened One of the other techies was not happy and called the supervisor in, and I was told there would be a further investigation into the incident. They did a full restore and never charged a thing because it was caused by one of there people, and even though it took a few days it was good when they got done.
I asked the chat guy at 24×7 why some of the sidebars were deleted and some static and some still independent, and he said ‘”there was a plugin conflict with the widget” ummm that doesn’t tell me why some were still independent and still working..and some are static.. The sidebar plugin has been stable and caused no problems, and I deleted the social media widget off that started the whole mess. Like- why tell me everything is fixed and ask for money and its not fixed..
I may be a newbie, but if something is fixed it is fixed–if it is not it is not–
The thing I am concerned about is afterwards there is some “hidden” problem they have left behind, and I find out later on down the road, so I am going to have to go through things with as fine a tooth comb as I know how to do…

    Hi @nitehawk,

I am sorry you are having so much trouble fixing just a minor issue.
Keep us updated of follow ups, guess hostgator techs can fix your problems.

If they are not able to fix things up, please restore back-up to when the problems occurred (your plugin) and let me have a look (if you are okay with that).

    Have a nice day.

    thanks for the offer!
I have back-ups in my hostgator account and am letting have 24×7 have a last shot at it,. Like I said, if they cannot get it this time I will simply tell them to forget it,
and see what hostgater can do..The funny thing is that the social media plugin was supposed to be compatible with “ocean” theme. Am wondering how stable the “ocean” theme is.. If there are other themes that are similar to “ocean” am willing to look at different themes for my next website…
anyone have a good ideas for a good theme??

    Avada is a great theme

is avada a premium of free theme?

It’s premium theme. Best I ever used and definitely multifunctional.

    I am back—what a gong show…
Once again I was called by 24×7 and told everything was fixed and please contact the chat line. I went on the website, and still stuff was missing from the menu dropdown..
I checked out my sidebars and ALL of my independent sidebars were TOTALLY gone this time, and replaced with a static sidebar. So if I put something on one sidebar it is copied across the whole website—which is NOT what I want, and is not what I had put together with my site. The plugin for the independent sidebars that was working fine and causing no problems at all, they deleted the plugin off and put the static sidebar in its place. There was NOTHING wrong with the sidebar or its plugin, and it had been working fine all along.. earlier they had messed around with the sidebars and had some static and some independent.
I told them the drop down menu STILL was not working, and some of the stuff showed up and some stuff still wasn’t showing up..
I asked what happened to the sidebars, and was not given any answer..
Finally I told them I would simply get hostgator to do a restore if they couldn’t fix it.. So I was told– okay they would refund the down payment.
I guess I should check and see if they have refunded it or not.. I have been fighting a “bug” so haven’t been totally on top of my game right now..
Anyways I contacted hostgator and the drama continued…The fellow I talked to at chat said “no problem they could do a restore,” and he sent a ticket to my e-mail.. WELL guess what? 24×7 had done a back up of the website the day before which I had no knowledge of, as if that would do any good doing a back up of a defective situation.. 24×7 had NOT told me they did a back up, and this was the first I had heard of it.. The fellow at hostgator said that the back up that 24×7 had done was the only one that was available. I said “no way, I had backed up the site several times and they were in the file manager.” He kept insisting that the back up that 24×7 had done absolutely the only one that was available.I kept asking “then why on earth do we do backups if they are not available? I could see the back ups in the file manager, and I told this fellow that the 1st techie from hostgator who had “helped me” put my website online had deleted the whole website off and that the admin had restored it. My questions went totally unanswered. The chat line fellow asked me who my web developer was, and I told him I didn’t have a web developer, that I had put the website together myself. He absolutely insisted that hostgator could not help me and that I had to have a web designer help me put it back together again. I told him that 24×7 couldn’t help me so I didn’t figure anyone else could either, and he typed a few numbers and names of web developers down and told me to contact them.. I was so annoyed that when I closed the chat I didn’t trust myself to rate the conversation. I picked up the phone and called hostgator, and told the person I spoke to my problems, he hummmed and looked at the back ups in file manager and said—”would it be okay to restore back to March 23 date?” I said “that would be fine,” and that was it, it was done… The next time I looked at the site it was restored.
and everything was there except a few minor problems that I could fix myself- like the counter was gone, and the one horse footer widget was slid sideways. That was an easy fix, and I expected it, as I had done a quick back up, even though I was dealing with minor problems at the time.
I decided that I would change my wordpress website- password, as I didn’t want anyone going back into the website mucking around. I changed the password, and went to bed.. Well someone must have been in the backside or had it open when I was in there changing the password, because this morning when I looked at the website, the one horse that had been slid sideways was totally gone!! A family member can vouch that both the horses had been on the front end when it was fixed last night and I went to bed.
I have gotten an e-mail from 24×7 asking how the service was, I haven’t trusted myself to reply yet…
How can one tell someone that the problem is fixed and ask for money when the problem is NOT fixed? And the guy on the chat line from Hostgator, either don’t know what he is talking about, or something..
Anyways,Has anyone ever used AccessPress Social icons plugins??
I had it on the website and active a long time ago but couldn’t figure out how to use it, so de-activated it.. At least it didn’t crash anything when I had it active…..

    Hi @nitehawk,

I see you have loads of problems with the website. Still my offer stands to take a look at the website (Had a webdevelopment company in The Neterlands called Maximum Webdesign). Although it looks like the menu is working now (on desktop and on mobile phones).

Also for the Social Icons plug-in, it seems to be okay (not tested). It has been updated 2 months ago by their developer and got good ratings by the users.
    Always make a back-up before installing/deleting plug-ins and/or editing hardcoded files.

    Cheers.

I am pretty sure it was the last plugin that I downloaded “social media widget standard”– and not some of the earlier ones that caused it to crash, I never noticed the menu gone until then, although maybe I over looked it, but I don’t think I did.
Also when I deactivated and re-activated -social media widget standard-the menu area turned color back and forth, back and forth..
Any stable social media plugins that anyone can recommend? also any view counter plugins that are recommended?
I looked at some of the HTML counter widgets online, and most of them stick advertisement in the widget, or the widget has to work through someone elses website which is annoying..

    Hi @nitehawk,

There are multiple sociale media plug-ins which would do the job good.
    Here my top three plug-ins:
    1. Monarch Social Sharing Plugin;
    2. Simple Share Buttons Adder;
    3. Easy Social Share Buttons for WordPress.

Also a good counting plug-in would be ADS-WP SITE COUNT Plugin.

    Cheers.
