• Hi,

I want to create a membership site. I’ve found several plugins that will allow this (s2member for one). However, I will need a good theme that will handle a membership site and the plug-in.

The company that makes s2member has some themes available for $75. I guess that’s a good price, but I’m wondering if there is a free theme that would work also. The good thing about the paid theme is that I know it is optimized for a membership site and the plug-in.

But, there are tons of free themes. Not sure how to figure out if one theme is better for a membership site compared to another. The last time I looked into this (a couple of years ago), most of the free themes were very simply, offered 2 or 3 types of pages, and had few options. If that is still the norm, I’m not sure it is good for a membership site.

What do you recommend for this?

  • s2member is a great plugin, and it integrates well with just about any theme. (I’ve used it with 3-4 different ones now, no issues with any of them)

I would choose a theme that looks modern and professional and matches the niche your site will be in. If you go to google blogsearch and type “business wordpress themes” or “portfolio wordpress themes” and make sure it is from the past year or so you will likely see lots of different options! There is also a commercial section for the themes here on wp.org – lots of themes to choose from that will look good and come with support ??

Thanks mchelles….I appreciate the advice. One of my concerns in choosing a theme is knowing which one is better than another. All I really have to go by is the description of the theme (and perhaps a rating or review, if those are available).

In the Free Themes section on WP, there is a “last updated” date and a rating and review sidebar…which is somewhat helpful. But, if I search for themes on Google, almost none of them say when they were created or updated. The live demo feature is helpful, but what I want to see is the control panel…so I know what my options are. Even the ones that have a long list of features are not guaranteed to work well, or to be easy to customize.

Several paid themes have been recommended at Warrior Forum, so I’m fairly sure those are good options. But, I would like to experiment with a free one first. Is there a good review site for free themes? One of the major drawbacks of the free themes that I’ve seen is…they look free :-).

Any additional advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
