Members losing access after cancelling mid term

I have a website setup where members can sign up for a 12 month subscription or a 1 month subscription. Lately members have been contacting me with the remark that they are no longer having access when they cancelled their membership midway.
For example, a member signed up for a twelve month subscription on August 1sth 2024 and cancelled on August 25th 2024. Normally they should remain having access till August 1th 2025, but they lose access immediately.
How can we set it up so the member would retain their access after cancellation and only the recurring payment is cancelled?
