Membership plugin

  • I thought it was easy … but no!

    One day I said to myself “It would be interesting to create a private area on my site where I can offer content only for registered users AND content for single users”. After hours of studying and testing with various plugins I realized that it is not as simple as I thought.

    So I decided to take stock of my studies and ask the community for help.

    The problem is divided into two parts:
    1- login / registration
    2- content restriction

    The login part is not a problem, as WordPress already offers this functionality, but the private area should at least do these two things:
    1- Have dynamic menus that change according to the type of user (if he is logged in he must not see “login”, if he is a guest he must not see “my profile”)
    2- Remember me (almost all plugins offer this possibility)

    The second part concerns the restriction of the content, and here I found the greatest difficulties.

    There are many plugins to manage restricted areas with “per role” access and some rare extensions with “single user” access, but if you wanted both solutions …

    I tested these plugins, of which I put a brief description:

    Simple WordPress Membership
    It is not possible to restrict access to individual users

    One of the few that restricts access by single user BUT NOT by user role
    It has no dynamic menus

    Restrict Content by iThemes
    It works for user roles and groups and has many options.
    It does NOT work for individual users
    It has no dynamic menus

    It has dynamic menus!
    Automatically create login / registration pages
    It has the paid “private content” extension for user-specific content. $ 40 per year

    Paid Memberships Pro
    It has no dynamic menus
    Automatically create login / registration pages
    No restrictions for single user in the free version. They have a lot of paid plugins that probably manage to do this.

    One of the few that narrows to single user. Very good, shame about the slowness

    It has no specific content in free mode. It costs 199 lifetime

    The conclusion is that to date, if I want to use only FREE plugins, I don’t know how to create a reserved area that can manage restrictions for user roles AND ALSO restrictions for single users.

    I hope I was clear. Do you have any ideas?

    Hello Corrina,

    thank you for pointing me out also the MemberPress solution. The Rules capability is great but… unfortunately, like the others, it is not possible to do what I want in the free version. Comparing MP’s annual $ 179 with Ultimate Member at $ 40, it’s not a viable option at the moment.

    Mission impossible remains impossible for now … ??

    Update from my studies:

    I finally tried to use the (previously evil) WP Customer Area together with a blade fast Blocksy theme and it seems to work just fine…

    So, as today I think I will divide the problem in 2:

    1: if I want to create a generic restriced area by user role I will use one of these two plugins: WP User Manager or Ultimate Member

    2: if I want to create a system with single user contents, I will use WP Customer Area

    WP Customer Area needs some tweeks in the skins but it’s completely fine. It work well.
