Media uploader creates pixelated and banded images

  • I’ve been noticing strange banding and pixillation happening to all images I upload with a white background.
    This only seems to happen on my local MAMP installations (happens with the latest version of MAMP 2.2 and was happening with the previous version I had (2.0) too).

    Uploading media to a live website does not seem to create these bad thumbnails.
    This has been happening for the last 4 versions of WordPress for me.

    Could it be my version of PHP that I’m running on OSX (10.8.5)?

    Update: it appears to only be visible on my older monitor. My new laptop doesn’t display the grey bits crunchy bits. So my old monitor with less pixels and less colour depth shows up dodgy compression better than my new retina screen laptop. This is disturbing me…
