I keep getting this error message when trying to upload an image

    Error Untitled1.png
The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2014/12.

I know it’s not the format of the image or something I am doing wrong. Is this a bug?

Please advise as we rely heavily on images for our site.

  • I have this issue on my VPS server. Cannot relate to any changes and all settings checked and with hosting. Deffo bug and WP issue!

I was on the phone with GoDaddy for about 2 hours and they could not fix the issue. He got rid of me by saying he had refreshed the IP and it should all be fine in 20 minutes. It’s not – I still have exactly the same problem. The man tried, but I could tell he did not have a clue how to help me. I am paying a lot of money to GoDaddy, so this is definitely disappointing. He tried to blame the problem the problem on WordPress. I said this puts me in a difficult position – WordPress says it’s a host issue, the host says it’s a WordPress issue – and I am stuck in the middle, and my online business will go out of business if I cannot load images. And right before Christmas, too – what a time to stop posting!
He also told me to download an FTP program and start using that. I said fine, but my point is, how can my site work just fine for 5 years on GoDaddy, and then one day it stops working, and somehow this is my problem and I have to fix it?? I am baffled and despairing. How hard is it to change hosts? Does anyone know of a host company that can actually help in these situations?

I am pretty sure you have tried this but worth saying just in case: when Go Daddy reset the permissions you have to log out of the account and then log back in.

Also, the guy who fixed mine didn’t get it right first time. In the end he logged on to my WordPress account remotely and fixed it that way so maybe they need to do that to fix the problem?

Not sure if this is useful but I phoned the London call centre (020 7084 1810) and worked through the automated system to get tech support for hosting and spoke to an Americam guy called Chris. He was really helpful.

It is immensely frustrating, I was pulling my hair out over it. I think I was just lucky to get someone who was really helpful and stuck with it to get it fixed.

I contacted GoDaddy tech support yesterday and the guy I talked to said it would up take up to 24 hours for permissions to reset. It has been 14 hours since I communicated with him and it isn’t resolved yet :/

ayc_ Do you know what they did in WordPress to fix the issue?

There’s a workaround but it’s a pain in the neck! I have to login to my GoDaddy account, and under Tools click File Manager which brings me to the FTP page. Then I have to click the WP-Content folder, then the Uploads folder, then the 2014 folder, then select the checkbox next to the 12 folder, then click Privacy up top, then UNclick Inherit and click Web Visible & Web Writable, and click OK.
Then go back to my website and upload the photos I need to upload.
Then go back to GoDaddy’s File Manager and change the permissions back to Inherit, otherwise my site crashes. Soooooooo frustrating.
But at least it’s a workaround. The woman at GoDaddy I live-chatted with yesterday said that’s what I’ll have to do every time I upload a picture unless I switch to the Linux hosting plan but I think that’s bullcrap. It sounds like it depends on which GoDaddy staffer you get on the phone or live-chat. Some can fix it and some say it can’t be fixed.

I’m not sure what they did to fix it in word press, unfortunately. He actually logged onto my WordPress without even needing the password which I didn’t know they could do. Well, what he actually said was “I am going to change your WordPress password to your Go Daddy password, login, fix it and then change your password back again”.

That work around sounds very cumbersome. I completely agree, it depends on who answers the phone. I was not changed over to Linux but they fixed mine. Really hope you can get this sorted out soon. I was pulling my hair out with it.

I had an issue where my images wouldn’t upload, the install of new plug-ins and themes prompted me for FTP pwd and login. I talked to a different person at GoDaddy today and resolved my issue.

In GoDaddy: File Manager, wp-content, privacy, uncheck inherit and make sure read write or checked. That resolved my issue, hope it helps others.

    Thank you katherinehuynh!!

I am with goDaddy as well and I needed to edit style.css but couldn’t change privacy for a file in a child-theme, so I called their support and they also told me to move my hosting to linux which I did (it took 10 minutes) ONLY THEN I couldn’t upload media, keep getting errors about a temp folder is missing.. Again I talked to support and they said I need to rewrite php5.ini file but I don’t know php (!)
Then I moved back to windows (it took 24 HOURS) and I got error uploading media “..The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2014/12”

so katherinehuynh your solution worked for me :)))

    Dear Katherine,

I am new to this, but I have the same problem with uploading pics, but when clicking on GoDaddy from my Dashboard in WP or logging into my GoDaddy account I can′t see were to find the File manager, wp-contetnt etc. as you describe. I don’t know programming:-) Would you be so kind to direct me?

    Million thanks in advance.

Thanks! I found out, but really appreciate the response. But it did not work. Been on the phone with GoDaddy for almost 3 hours, great service but so far no solution. They have put a team on it they told me.

    Again thanks for your response.

    Edsky

Katherinehuynh you are a Godsend! Such a simple fix after pulling out my hair! Everyone please try her solution! Thanks!

    Thank you katherinehuynh!!

    Hi

Had same problem as katherinehuynh with Godaddy.

I tried the same solution below and it works well!

In GoDaddy: File Manager, wp-content, privacy, uncheck inherit and make sure read write or checked.

That resolved my issue, hope it helps others.

    Cheers
    Serros
