• I would appreciate some help with Media on my new site which has just gone live.
I created the site from a purchased Theme and over the last month have been updating text and pictures. Fantastic as this is my first site.
The new site was on my existing ISP’s Server in a folder as ‘newsite’ with the url: https://www.idcardservices.co.uk/newsite
I asked my ISP how to remove the old site and install the new site, instructions as follows.
On the day of moving, via FTP in public_html, I created a new folder ‘oldsite’. and put all the old site into the folder.
Once done I opened my ‘new site’ folder and put all the contents into public_html
In General settings I changed WordPress Address (URL) & Site Address by removing ‘newsite’
Everything seems to work well and I have tested it in all the Browsers, pages are there, sliders work email form works, images are present etc.

But, in my Media folder in wp-admin most of the pictures listed are unattached.
When I upload a new picture it seems to upload the image but cannot be viewed and I get a broken link box on the actual web page.
I now know that there was a better way of moving the WP site but did not see that at the time.

This is my first site and I have very little technical knowledge and reading the WP support forum has only confused me more.
I don’t want to lose the images I have on the site already but need to upload many more and cannot do it.
    Thanks
    MrB

  • change the urls back. See Changing_The_Site_URL. Then see Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory.

    Hi esmi,
Thank you for taking the time to respond but unfortunately I do not understand about changing the urls back. Do you mean back to https://www.idcardservices.co.uk/newsite.
I have followed both the links but cannot find the answer or do not understand the answer.

Do you mean back to https://www.idcardservices.co.uk/newsite.

    Hi esmi,
I have changed both back in Setting-General, WP address & Site address to https://www.idcardservices.co.uk/newsite
Now the site is a mess and I can no longer login using wp-admin in the url with or without ‘newsite’.
Did I miss something here ?
    regards
    Paul

Where exactly are the WordPress core files & folders?

    Hi esmi,
I far as I am aware I moved them from the folder ‘newsite’ I created whilst getting the site ready on the server and into ‘public_html’ on the server, re my first post above
Please remember I am very new to WP
    regards.

    Hi esmi,
Something has gone very wrong and I am backing up everything on the server to see if I can salvage anything. 303.7MB
All I needed to do was somehow reconnect the Media file so I could update and install new images but I do not think that can happen now, it looks a right mess.

    Just to follow up,
I used my cpanel with my ISP to roll everything back and restore from the point 2 days ago. I have also created a full backup of my ‘newsite’ through WP.
I now have ‘the newsite’ live again but I do not have the ability to upload any new images to it as per my original post.
I have read again Changing_The_Site_URL & Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory but I do not understand what I have done wrong. Where are the images that I upload going to, can I not create or link to the Media folder without taking the whole site down.

I do not have the ability to upload any new images

what happens when you upload an image?

    Hi esmi,
I now have ‘my old’ site back up and the ‘newsite’ back in the folder on the Server at my ISP. They rolled everything back to Monday this week including mysql database.
I now need to find out now how to replace my old idcardservices.co.uk with ‘newsite’.
I understand there is an automated way of doing this.
The previous instructions I had was to pack the old site into a folder on the server and then put everything from ‘newsite’ in its place. I also changed the WP address and the site address in settings general to idcardservices.co.uk and this worked fine the ‘newsite’ was up and running.
The problem was when I went to add new pictures to a page as I had done previously all I got was the very small box with an x on the web page to show there was no image and in the Media folder there was no thumbnails of any images even those showing up on the pages. I tried this over 20 times but the images never appeared, I checked the link to the images and they seemed to be there, but I do not know what the link should have been.
As I said previously, I am very new to WP and find many of the instructions somewhat baffling to understand.

    MrB

    OK- can you clarify:
-the location of the WordPress core files
    – the urls entered in Settings -> General
    – the url you want to use for this site
