Media not showing – uploading to different directories

I am running a MultiSite install of WordPress on WordPress 5.2.1
The principal site works fine https://SuperSnailArt.co.uk

I have created 2 sub-domains:
? https://photos.SuperSnailArt.co.uk
? https://portfolio.SuperSnailArt.co.uk

I am able to access the respective dashboards etc as normal.
Uploaded images to main site display in Media Library and website.
Uploaded images to subdomain sites DO NOT display in Media Library or website.

When uploading media (images only) to the principle site they are stored in:

URL from WordPress
https://supersnailart.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/portrait-web.jpg
URL from FTP client
…supersnailart.co.uk/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/portrait-web-666×1000.jpg

When uploading media (images only) to the sub-domains site they are stored in:
URL from WordPress
https://photos.supersnailart.co.uk/files/2019/06/bharna-ladpur-area-uttar-pradesh.jpg
URL from FTP client
…supersnailart.co.uk/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/22/files/2019/06/bharna-ladpur-area-uttar-pradesh-100×100.jpg

I have examined NETWORK ADMIN/SITES/SETTINGS of each site as suggested in various online fixes and have experimented with the subdomain paths.
Nothing.
I have amended the .htaccess file as recommended in other online articles.
Nothing.
I have reset directory permissions through FTP client to various combinations of 777, 755, 744.
Nothing.
I have added code to wp-config.php
Nothing

The main site is running the theme STACKER LITE.
The subdomains would be using TWENTY SEVENTEEN if they worked.

I have run out of leads on the www and now the different search terms are beginning to yield already visited links.

I have included a link to an image.

Any help would be gratefully received. I am not a WordPress novice but neither am I a coder. I’m happy with html and css and child themes.
