• I have just installed a clean install of WordPress onto my domain. I am having a problem in that the Media Library is not recognising any images uploaded via FTP into the uploads folder. It is also not allowing me to upload any images via the Media Library tab providing the following error:

The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2018/01.

I have searched online, updated permissions and generally driven myself around in circles! I’m not a great techy, but happy to give things a go!

Any help would be much appreciated!!

  • I would try re-installing wordpress, new clean install with new database. You can even try to find does your hosting c-panel have automatic install script like softaculous or similar.

    Also site url would help.

Inability to upload via the media library does sound like a permissions issue. Perhaps you should contact your hosting company and ask them to make sure that all permissions are set correctly.

However, WordPress does not add images uploaded by FTP to the media library so you shouldn’t expect them to appear there unless you use one of the plugins that are available.

Thx @slllobodan – this is a completely fresh install for the 2nd time – same issues.

Thx @petervandoorn – good to know about the FTP uploads not automatically being recognised by the media library. Permissions for the Uploads folder (and sub folders) is 755.

Don’t know if if this makes any difference, but when i installed WordPress the Uploads folder wasn’t there, i had to create it via ftp…..

Yes, that’s very odd. Did you install it manually or via a button on your hosting control panel? Either way, I definitely think you should contact them about it as it sounds like you’ve done everything.
