I would like to see hits for individual files in the Media Library. Ideally an extra column in the Media Library for hits which can be sorted.

Google Analytics will only count on-page clicks, it won’t give us actual hits of a file (it’ll ignore direct links, links from external sites, RSS feeds, etc). For this you need to utilise server logs and that’s a hassle and way beyond most user’s skills. AWStats can do this but it’s a hassle as you need to log in, edit the date range (to include all-time downloads), then find your file, etc.

I think it would be useful if the Media Library simply scanned the server logs for all-time hits to each file. If it was too intensive to do this on-the-fly then it could be done on a schedule behind-the-scenes.

Of note, it can’t. The GA script doesn’t run on non-php files where the JS that rules it isn’t called.

This would have to be a plugin, because not everyone has the same server stat scanners.
