Media Library no longer creates all the image size versions

  • In the past uploading an image would create 16 new images all of different sizes.
    e.g. windowSignage.jpg – created windowSignage-1024×630.jpg plus all the set.

    In the Media Library menu you would see it and be able to click on it to set it up and add description etc.

    NOW
    I get a grey rectangle (no – Title) Site icon and a view link that just goes back to the same screen. On the server I can see the file but the system has not created all the sizes.
    The past images are still working.

    The site was created in a sub-directory and than the site Address url was set to root.
    I have updated php to version 5.6 and wordpress to 4.3

    Any help what to look at, I would be very greatful
