Media Library: Images resize when uploaded

I’ve got a weird problem with my media library.

I optimized some images for the web using GIMP. One of my images is 148 KB after optimization is 148 KB.

However, when I try to add this image into my Media Library, it shows up as a whopping 877 KB.

What the heck is happening?
