Hello, I have searched high and low for an answer to this simple question. I do not need to remove duplicates, I need to be able to Clone/Copy/Duplicate an existing Image (with a new name). So that I can modify the clone/copy/duplicate whilst leaving the original intact.

I do hope that someone can assist me or point me in the right direction.

    Kind Regards,

    Edward

While there may be a plugin that I’m unaware of, you may as well make a copy from the original source, renaming it locally (if you don’t, WP will do so when it encounters a file with the same name), then uploading the renamed file. In fact, if you intend on editing the image, I recommend also doing so locally before uploading. Using a proper image editor will give you much better control over the final image over doing so within WP.

In a few cases, when you alter an image in WP, WP will rename the image and make a new media item for it, while leaving the original intact. For example, when cropping an image selected for the header image in the customizer. Even when you edit in the media library, the original file remains unchanged, however, the attachment data then relates to the altered and renamed files, the originals are no longer used by WP. I doubt that’s the behavior you would want, it’s just FYI that WP never alters original files. No longer used, but unaltered.
