• Since 1st of September….
I have been struggling for nearly three weeks with putting new photos into my media library and two latest posts and having them replaced with grey square with question mark. They are my latest 41 photos
I have checked with my website hosting company and they have increased image size to 32Mb, all permissions are correct and they don’t see any errors from their side.
I use an iMac and have checked site on iPad and no images show for the latest post(s). Have used a windows machine, same problem
My site is [ Redundant like redacted ]
I have disabled all plug ins, checked media library and still not resolved.
I have replaced original theme, with another and still same issue.
Tried small photos <0.5M – same problem
I am not technical, but I must be doing something stupid.
Any help to get this resolved, will be greatly appreciated
    Cheers

Are the problem images supposed to appear on your home page? I’m seeing images, not grey squares. Perhaps you’ve resolved this?

No it has not been resolved. If you look at my website, you will see above the man in uniform and to the left of the soldier kissing the girl, you will see a blank square with ? and no photo. If you hover over the square you will see the text relating to the red arrows and if you double click on the text, it will take you into the post, where there is text and where the photos should be.
    Hope this potentially helps you

I see now, my browser was collapsing missing images instead of putting up a placeholder. Even entering an image URL in my browser, it comes back 404 file not found, so this is likely a server issue beyond WP, assuming the path is correct. For example:
    https://pierrotphoto.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/2018-Red-arrows-at-Cromer-carnival-17-305x300.jpg
Please use FTP or your host’s file manager to verify the path is correct and there is a file by that name that contains data, and that permissions are correct (typically 644). Are you able to download this file back to your computer and open it in an image viewer? If that works, delete the file on the server and re-upload using FTP or file manager, NOT WordPress. Use exact same name. Will the image now open in a browser (image URL only, no HTML or WP post)?

If the path is incorrect, then maybe there is a WP problem, but this is looking like a server issue. For anyone following along, the above image URL is from this post:
    https://pierrotphoto.co.uk/2018-red-arrows-cromer-carnival/

There are a bunch of Red Arrow pics there that do not display. I’m kinda bummed I can’t see the Red Arrow pics ??

I’m sorry, all assistance needs to stay here in a public forum. I will not do private assistance off of these forums. All members here, mods or not, are expected to adhere to the same for relationships first established here. Unenforceable of course, but expected.

If a direct file URL is failing to be found, it’s not a WP issue, so the help we can provide is limited. About all I can think of that hasn’t been mentioned is to review applicable .htaccess rules that might be inadvertently be blocking access. Sometimes server security modules like mod_security can cause problems.

And if I add existing photos from previous posts, renamed, since WP media recognises identical photos, i get the same problem!! So its not the photos causing the issue. So frustrating

Fully understand about openness in public fora.
Are .htacess rules obvious or server security rules, to the untrained eye?
Would putting screen copy of .htaccess be of use?

Went to client hosting and searched on .htaccess and it found this :

    /public_html/wp-content/plugins/all-in-one-wp-security-and-firewall/logs/.htaccess
Date of this was August 18th… All my red arrows were uploaded 19th of August – date problems started.
So may have identified it…but issue is still there if I disable the plug in

That .htaccess likely just prevents public access to log files. Unrelated I think. Sorry I wasn’t more specific. The .htaccess that is the possible culprit is the one in the main installation folder. The one with a WordPress section.

If you can paste the contents of that file here if not too long, or to pastebin.com if extensive, I’ll take a look. Be sure to obfuscate any sensitive info before posting!

Any other .htaccess along the image path could also be the cause, but it is rare for any others to exist.

i will paste contents over next couple of days, once I have got over a stupid error……..
