Media Library file permissions for editor

    This is driving me crazy. In older versions of WordPress that I’ve worked on, the editor acct. had the same file permissions in the media library as the admin (i.e. “edit”, “view”, and “delete permanently”). Now I’m working with a client on a new WP site, and the editor account only has the “view” option in the media library. They can upload photos, but once they’re uploaded they can only “view”. I have unactivated every single plug-in I have installed, thinking maybe that was it. Nothing. Was there a change implemented in 3.0.4 that caused this? Can I alter the codex to give the editor acct. these permissions?

    I reviewed them ad nauseam, @esmi. Yes, both my admin and editor accounts can view media and add new media, but for some reason the editor account cannot edit and delete media when in the media library…

    There were no changes made to any of the capabilities in 3.0.4 as far as I am aware. However, a couple of the 3.0.x upgrades were security patches that focused specifically on user roles/capabilities. It’s not beyond the bounds of reason to imagine that an inadvertent issue was introduced at that time.

    Can you replicate this in a clean install (no plugins) using Twenty Ten?

    Yes, I can replicate it. I have a handful of 3.0.4 installs, all with Twenty Ten, and it’s the same with each. Not the case in older sites that I have live.

    Can you upgrade to 3.0.5? There were some bug fixes there and I wonder if that’s related.

    3.0.5 is a VERY minor upgrade to 3.0.4. Unlike 3.1 which is a major release change.

    Update: I just upgraded a test site I have from 3.0.4 to 3.1, and the issue is still there…

    I’ve just tried to replicate your problem on a 3.0.5 local install using Twenty Ten and can’t. A newly created Editor was able to upload an image and then able to go back in and edit it. Ditto for 3.1

    Are these sites all on the same server? Or with the same host?

    Nope, different servers, different hosts. Back to the drawing board. I’ll try another fresh install and let you know what happens…

    Just completed fresh installs of 3.0.4 and 3.1. Issue is still here for me.

    There have been some changes in this area in 3.0.5 and 3.1, but if this was not working for you in 3.0.4, then I’m really not sure what was going on here.

    Thanks for checking in Andrew. Yeah, I’m stumped. All fresh installs I’ve tried are from fresh downloads and have fresh DBs. Lots of fresh. That said, could it be a SQL issue? Doesn’t seem likely, but could it?

    I was having a similar issue as initially reported here and was able to allow ‘edit | Delete permanently’ to appear only after attaching the item in the media library to some page/post within the site. All media that had been added directly via the Media Library was marked as ‘unattached’ and was only ‘view’-able by editors (admin could ‘edit | delete’ regardless of how the item was imported.

    This is all observed within WP 3.1.1 (a fresh install).
