• Hi
I am using wordpress on my local pc as an offsite staging site.
I can export the pages and posts from the live website and then import those successfully into my staging wordpress website but when I try to do the same with images. It fails. I get a list of all the images that failed to import. But the media library is still empty.
All the images from the live site are stored in the WP-Content-uploads folder in the years they were originally uploaded to the website.

I went to the file server using filezilla and brought across the uploads folder and put it in the same place in my offsite staging folder but the images still don’t appear on the staging site and the media library is still empty.

How can I import the media items into my staging offsite website.

    Thanks

  • Just an idea: do you use the same domain for your local staging page as for the live page? Then the staging page cannot reach the media files because it tries to load them from its “own domain”. If this is the case, you should change the domain of the staging page – and also make sure that this is set correctly in your local DNS, so that the domain of the live page also points to this and not to the staging page.

    Hi
    Answer – no.
The staging page is my local computer I use MAMP to initially build the website. I downloaded wordpress and the theme then I can see how a theme looks before putting on the live site that I have with my domain provider.

I worked out that I can import the images to another live website that I have with my current domain provider.

How do I change the domain of my staging site that I am building on my local pc. Is that something I need to change in one of the wordpress core files? I don’t think MAMP has options to change domains or DNS’s.

DNS is managed by your own computer, this has nothing to do with WordPress and also with MAMP. I don’t have a Mac myself, but I found instructions here on how to influence the DNS on the local computer: https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/software/how-to-edit-your-hosts-file-on-a-mac/ – note that you can only access the website in MAMP (as long as this change is active), not the live website. In WordPress in MAMP, you only have to change the domain with which WordPress should run there under Settings > General.
