I started having a problem with getting a message of “http error” when I try uploading a picture from my computer to media library a few weeks ago with 3.8. I hoped updating to 3.9 would fix the problem but it hasn’t. My photos are well within the max size.

I have tried disabling plugins which did not work. I also tried changing file permissions on my ftp server.

I am not willing to delete my blog and reinstall WordPress (been up for over 2 years now) or change to a default template (it took days to get the blog looking the way I want it and from what I’ve read this doesn’t usually work anyway). Any other ideas?

lol indeed. No, I’m not reinstalling a blog that’s been up 2+ years and 150 posts. I’m also still not clear whether the problem is with my server or with wordpress program, though it’s looking more like a wordpress issue.

Nope, it’s back at it again…please can someone help? Until I upgraded to 3.9 everything worked flawlessly. This is getting really frustrating, I have work to do!!

To summarize things I have tried: changing permissions, disabling plugins, exploring temp folder on control panel (not full), exploring excessive backups (not a problem), looking at php_errorlog (nothing there), changing to default theme in a child folder, using in different browsers.

When I try to upload a photo from my computer I get “http error” and the picture does not show in the media library. About 15 minutes later, the picture does show, but I can’t select a size from the media panel. On the code in text for the post it shows my caption and my picture size as 1 pixel. When I manually change that, the picture does display in the post.

This is definitely a WP 3.9 issue. On the same server I have 8 other WP sites and the only one with any problems is my main site which I just upgraded to WP 3.9

The other sites have NOT been upgraded and are still working perfectly fine.

My problem is getting worse. I am now getting Error 500 when I try to access WP-ADMIN. I can still go to the main site and it’s up and working with no errors. I just can’t do ANY admin functions now.

Is this a 3.9 problem? Not sure. We might be having different issues. I began having problems after the last of the 3.8 auto updates.

Senorfrog, if it worked fine until 3.9 then you could try rolling back. This is not recommended for security reasons – the latest version of WordPress is the most secure to run – but it is possible. You would need to make a backup of your site before rolling back to a previous version. There are many articles available online which will guide you through the process should you decide to go that way.

I have also found temporary relief from each of my above suggestions – changing browser (works for 2 of my sites but not the 3rd one even though it uses the same theme); deleting backups… there seems to be no rhyme or reason. I’ve had problems since the start of 3.8 but I have read on the support forums that other users have been experiencing the same issue as far back as 2.5, so it’s not new.

It’s frustrating as there doesn’t seem to be any obvious solution. My hosting company are also at a loss for what to suggest. Strangely, I can upload images so long as they are smaller than 1MB with no problem. Yet others struggle with very small images of a few KB… So it doesn’t even seem as though the problem is uniform.

Still having problems here with the media upload. I’ve been searching other threads and it seems like this is a very common problem, but no real solutions.

I had the same problem – contaced my hosts and they sorted it.
The problem in my case was due to the recent HEARTBLEED bug fix.

its a new rule and its stopping the upload i am about to check out which one. we had to update due to HEARTBLEED BUG:”

    still having problems with this

Can you not upload at all? Even small images? And have you tried uploading both in the post editor and in the media section too? Not ideal but a suggestion might be to roll back to an older version of WordPress if you’ve only just started having problems? I hope someone more experienced than me has a proper solution though. I am also still experiencing problems and have to resize images to less than 1mb before uploading.

My webhost company resolved this issue for me. I don’t know what the problem was.

Just to add a note… I have been in touch with my web hosting company once more as the problem noted above was persistent no matter what I tried. I got put in touch with a higher level of support… who suggested updating my .htaccess file in my root directory to update the version of php used by my sites. I updated it to 5.5 and everything is running smoothly. This is the line I added to my .htaccess in my root directory (to effect all of my WordPress sites – it can also be added in the individual .htaccess files of each WordPress install depending on where you need the update to be made)

    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php55 .php

    Hope this helps.
