Media files upload but only appear as grey boxes

Hi All
I’ve been scrolling through loads of threads with similar problems regarding getting media files to work but have not seen or tried a fix that works.

I’ve tried deactivating all plugins, even emptied the files folder and reloaded wordpress all to no avail so far.

When I upload a media file all goes well it appears to be in the files folder and appears on my media list but only as a grey box

any other ideas?
