• Hi,

I’ve had this issue ever since I started using WP for my photography website. My workflow is as follows:

WP + Media Library Folders plugin + Media Library Assistant Plugin.

    1. Create a bunch of photos to a folder on my PC, sort them and batch rename using FastStone Image Viewer with subsequent numbers, for example “Holiday-Trip-01.jpg, Holiday-Trip-02.jpg, Holiday-Trip-03.jpg and so on. The naming order doesn’t always match the order % time I’ve take and exported photos from Lightroom but I often rearrange them to fit later.

    2. Create a folder on my server such as wp-content/uploads/xxxx/yyyy/Holiday-Trip and upload photos using FTP

    3. Using Media Library Folders plugin import the new folder and photos into the media gallery.

    4. Using Media Library Assistant batch edit to add descriptions, captions and so on.

    5. Create new post and add media. Here’s where the issue begins. The Media library hasn’t got any option to sort files by name, I think it uses the timestamp which is often completely random as I upload and import files into the gallery using Media Library Folders plugin. Adding them into the post is a pain as they show in a random order rather than how I named them (*01.jpg, *02.jpg and so on).

My solution so far is to add one media file into the post, copy the code, use an auto-increment string generator to create the entire list starting from 01.jpg, then paste it into the Text editor in WP. It’s fine for photos with the same caption but a huge pain in the rear part if I need to edit it later.

So long story short – how do I get the Media Library to sort images by name instead of this nonsense?

  • With version 4, I was able to click the media library link from within a post, then choose an option to only see media attached to the post. In this view, I could drag my uploaded images around to create a new display order.

I haven’t found how to do this with version 5.
