Media files not showing up in media library

  • Media files have all disappeared from Media Library. I can see them in the wp-content/uploads folders. They also show up on the pages.

    Media > Library brings up “No Media Files Found.” Add Media to a post/page brings up “No Items Found.”

    I can upload new files to media library and they show up in the library.

    – Deactivated all plugins.
    – Switched to Twentyseventeen theme.
    – Checked permissions on Uploads folder: 755.

    Problem persists.

    Try to give permission 777 to uploads directory only.
    Are you on shared hosting(cpanel) OR dedicated?

    I changed to 777. no luck.

    Cpanel.

    Have you recently moved WordPress to a different folder or host?

    One option you may have is to download the original images via FTP and re-upload them in bulk to the media library. I am only suggesting this because you said everything is working as it should on old posts, so this would make these images available to you again when creating new posts.

    I haven’t moved WordPress, but I did do some updating. I updated some plugins and the child theme. But I don’t know if the problem existed before doing those updates.

    So you’re saying download the images, then re-upload them. I think I see what you mean. Then I gather I’d have duplicates of all the images on the server?

    Yes, unfortunately that is the “downside” but unless you have a ton of images I don’t see it being much of an issue.

    I just downloaded a copy onto my local machine to see if it works there. One thing that happened at the same time as the images disappearing: My menus disappeared from the site. Then when I went to Appearance > Menus, the menus are there but all the items in the menus say (Pending) after them. E.g. About Us (Pending). At the top of the page it says, “Click Save Menu to make pending menu items public.”

    Seems like it may be related to the disappearing images issue, where the resources are still there but don’t show up in some places.

    I just downloaded a copy onto my local machine to see if it works there.

    Since you have a backup copy on your local machine maybe you should take a look in the database (on your local machine).

    I’m not sure what to look for.

    This way you can determine where WordPress is looking for the images (URL’s). I would NOT recommend changing anything in the db though.
