Media Files Not Accessible from Library or Front-End

  • I recently updated my site to 4.2.1. There are multiple strange issues, but the first major one is that I’m unable to access any media files from the past.

    In FTP, All of the files are there in the monthly folders within 2013, 2014 folders. I added a new file and it DOES show in Media Library. It made a 2015 folder and the monthly folders like normal. It seems going forward I can access NEW media files, but nothing from the past is being viewed. These older files don’t show on the front-end, nor the media manager.

    I’ve deactivated all my plugins except Akismet (because I’m getting lots of spam at the moment) and nothing changes. I’ve switched to 2015 theme and nothing changes. I’ve tried adding the enhanced media library plugin, and see the same situation. New files are visible, old files aren’t.

    I’ve double checked the permissions and all the content folders are 0755 which is what the newly created 2015 files had as well as the old. I’m not sure what to try next.

    Other problems I’m having include large numbers of additional “untitled” posts that weren’t there. My Menus are all empty now. I had 2 menus which are now blank. I never got prompted to update my database, and I’m not sure how I would do that. It’s possible that these additional items are symptoms of a larger problem along with the media. If you guys feel they are separate issues, please ignore and I’ll make a new post once the media issue gets resolved.

    This is resolved, though the underlying problem isn’t. I was able to get things working again by restoring randomly between database and file back-ups from various dates. Eventually I got luck and found one that works. Somehow I updated the database and have 4.2.1 working, with 12 updates to do, but the site is working. I”ll step through these updates slowly and see if anything comes to the surface.

    Marking this as resolved for now.

    I have 4.2.2 and suddenly cannot access any media.
