Media files don't upload on multisite

So … you’re not getting any error at all, it’s just silently not working? How are you determining it’s not working? Did you look in the wp-content/uploads/sites/ folders?

It gives the error message, but I remember it used to be more informative than “Couldn’t upload files to wp-content/uploads”. Then again, I might have had different problem before.

Is there enough space to upload your files. Also, what is your maximum upload limit?

Check under “Network Settings” what you set “Site upload space” to.

But also check your /tmp folder (or whatever it is on your server) and make sure it’s not full!

Marc: There is enough space, my max file size is 10 mbs.

Does your site specific uploads folder have the required permissions settings?

The individual sites in the network are virtual sites in the sense that they do not have their own directories on your server, although they do have separate directories for media uploads within the shared installation, and they do have separate tables in the database.

It’s on your server. All servers have a /tmp type folder. Sometimes they don’t remember to clean themselves out. Ask your host for details if you can’t find it.

Keep in mind that Multisite requires you to be a server admin as well as a WP admin. You’re gonna need to learn this stuff :/

Mark: Yes, I’ve given all the rights for folders of wp-content, wp-content/uploads, wp-content/uploads/sites. However, I’ve added two sites, yet there is no folder for them in the site-section at all despite I have added all the extra stuff in config-file as well as the .htaccess-file.

Ipstenu: Site upload space is 1000 MBs, single file 10 MBs. Also the temporary folder of my site have used just few MBs (around 17, to be exact). I thought the wp-content/uploads had own /tmp-folder, sorry for the mix up!

EDIT: I created another WordPress on my site just to check out does it run on same problem and yep, there is something iffy about the my server or so since it can’t create the uploads-folders to begin with. I better go and troubleshoot what’s the problem why my server doesn’t allow WordPress to create folders or so.

You mean another site on the network or a separate install?

It may be a PHP problem, though that’s pretty rare. Have you tried making uploads 777? Yes I know, but to test…

Ipstenu: I did separate install and I’m running all the required folders on 777 and still it doesn’t want to create the uploads-folder.

I better ask help/double-check from the service provider first, since I’m running other domains on the same server that do have also WP installed – same versions even, yet none of those have the same problem. Maybe there there’s something iffy going on the domain settings itself since I had bit of setup problem with the domain itself few months ago.

One weird thought.

Check the user ID permissions on the server. I’m assuming the other domains are under separate user IDs? Like my domain’s under ipstenu, but my OTHER separate WP site is under my dad’s name. So ipstenu is in one group with certain permissions, and woody is in another.

All the domains are with the same ID.

However, I contacted to their support and they found out that the safe_mode of PHP was on for that domain and it was causing the problem. So everything is working well after I turned it off.
