    3.Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php.
    4.Open wp-config.php in your favorite text editor and fill in your database details.
    5.Place the WordPress files in the desired location on your web server:

    I am so confused, I could cry
    I downloaded mysql, still not sure if I need this, to use for the blogger.com site and later to move to my own host (when I get one)

    I filled out the mysql info, on the wp-config-sample.php area, but it says to save that file to the server- How?

    I feel life I need screenshots or someone to hold my hand, I don’t even know if I have all the programs I need downloaded.

    I have info overload and don’t know how to organize it all. Please guide me

    Unfortunately, there are no screenshot-filled installation guides that I know of (unless your hosting provider users cPanel, Plesk, vDeck, or Ensim), but you will find the detailed installation instructions to be far more helpful than the 5 minute instructions.

    FFL: I am more than willing to hold your hand through all of this. If you plan to go with blogger.com, you don’t need wordpress, you can just sign up there and start maintaining a weblog.

    If you choose to go with your own host, you need to install WordPress. Firstly, you need to find out from your webhost (the people who run your servers) whether you have:
    a. ssh access
    b. a mySQL database

    Eitherway, you don’t need to download anything more than WordPress, and that’s only if you plan to not go with blogger.

    If you go with DreamHost, you get (nearly) one-click installation of WordPress, + high quality gallery & forum software. Great prices & customer service, too. I wouldn’t be here otherwise, being only so much of a geek & no more. Once WordPress is installed, it isn’t too hard to pick a template & begin learning how to modify it. Best of luck!

    Ok, thank you all for your info, I understand now. I will need to get setup with a host first and than come back to freek out. The fog is starting to clear!

    Sorry, one more question:
    If my host has
    a. ssh access
    b. a mySQL database

    Then I don’t need Mysql myself, correct? I will uninstall then.

    @ffl, if you are going with any webhost with a decent package, you should not have to install any of the “supporting” features that WordPress needs, i.e., PHP, MySQL, and of course the web server(Apache).

    You need to just grab the WordPress files and place them in the appropriate directories.
