Hi – I get this error in my WordPress AALB settings:
ERROR – The file used to fetch country details to enable geo-targetted links doesn’t have read permissions. Please give recursive read/write permissons to:MaxMind_GeoLite2GeoLite2-Country.mmdb. In case you are still facing the issue, please change download folder in Site Wide Settings section on this page.

The file does not exist in my CPanel folder and I don’t know how to get it in there. Please would someone be able to help – I don’t know if I have to download this one… MaxMind DB binary, gzipped – or this one… CSV format, zipped. All the info is very clear on what exactly I have to do and how to get the files in the correct folder.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

I meant ‘All the info is NOT very clear’

I’ve tried re-installing and it’s still not working – I’d be so grateful if one of the support people can contact me so that I can move forward with my site. I found the plugin excellent, but this is a big hurdle. I can use the plugin, but I also get a big grey box with two smaller boxes in them instead of a product image – I think the API is causing this? – I can’t get the geo targeting working as I keep getting the following error –

ERROR – The file used to fetch country details to enable geo-targetted links doesn’t have read permissions. Please give recursive read/write permissons to:/home/whatchil/public_html/wp-content/uploads/amazon-associates-link-builder/GeoLite2-Country.mmdb. In case you are still facing the issue, please change download folder in Site Wide Settings section on this page.

Has anyone else had this, and how did it get solved? I’ve been looking in my CPanel, but as I’m new to this and don’t want to mess things up further, I’d really appreciate some assistance.

    Thanks

    Dear @sherrywp,

The Geo-targeting feature available from v1.5.2 of the plugin uses GeoLite2-Country.mmdb file. The error is due to the improper read-write permissions given to the plugin upload path and will not affect any functionality of plugin except restricting the use of the geotargeting feature. You can fix that by either giving proper read-write permissions to /home/whatchil/public_html/wp-content/uploads/ or by going to going to the plugin’s settings page & changing upload path to the path that has proper read-write permissions.

Hi, thank you for your reply – much appreciated!
I am really new to all this, so forgive me – I’m finding it really hard to understand it all. Should I be looking for a folder called ‘GeoLite2-Country.mmdb’ – because if so, I cannot locate it in my CPanel – I asked my host provider for assistance and they said that they also could not see the folder, but they claimed to have given me the read-write permissions – and I still get this error – I’m really stuck and confused!
Also, the large product images won’t appear when I import items using the plugin – I just get a big grey box – do you know why this could be?

    Many thanks

    Hi,
I contacted my host again, and they asked me for a number for the permissions! – I don’t know which number they mean, but they then put in the number ‘777’ as they said it came up in the selection – I still get the error though! And also I still get the grey box instead of the product image.

Please can you help me to resolve this? – I really like the potential of this plugin, but I just really, really need it to work with the Geo-targeting and to show the product image.

    Many thanks

    Dear @sherrywp,

Regarding your first query for permissions, the easiest way is to change the downloads folder for ‘GeoLite2-Country.mmdb. This can be done by:
    1. Go to AmazonAssociatesLinkBuilder plugin’s settings page.
    2. Go to Downloads Folder textbox under Site Wide Settings.
    3. Enter the path where you have all read-write permissions and Save the changes.

But if you still want to remain on the same path, do the following:
    1. Go to your upload path for WordPress which seems to be “/home/whatchil/public_html/wp-content/uploads/” from your comments above. And see if “amazon-associates-link-builder” is present or not.
    2. If not, it means the above path doesn’t have write permissions. Please give read-write permissions to above upload path.
    3. If “amazon-associates-link-builder” exists, still give recursive read-write permissions to above upload path. If you don’t know how to do that, give read-write permission to both upload path & “amazon-associates-link-builder” folder.
    4. Check read-write permission for “‘GeoLite2-Country.mmdb” file and give the same to this file.

    Dear @sherrywp,

Regarding your second query for grey box issue, may you please clarify this issue in detail. We are not able to follow you from the information provided. Also, it would be great if you share some screenshots also(by uploading them to Drive and sharing the link here).

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.
The GeoLite2-Country.mmdb folder is not there in my CPanel at all – the folder is not included in the plugin files. Do I have to go to the dev.maxmind.com web site and download the file? – And if so, how do I get it into my CPanel? – Or better still – can you send me a link to the plugin that has this folder included in the installation if this is what I need

    https://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/geoip2/geolite2/

(I’ll send a screen shot regarding the second issue)

    Thank you

There are 2 file paths, the first on for the Amazon folder is the path stated – home/whatchil/public_html/wp-content/uploads/

and the 2nd one is the path of the other Amazon folder. In both cases I am not a able to give permissions. I’m sure there are missing folders and that is causing the issue???

    Path to folder_1

    Path to folder 2

…And here I’m including screenshots of:
A – the Error that I keep getting in WordPress using the AALB
B – the website that shows a GeoLite2 file that I think that I’m missing (but I’m no expert and I’m totally confused lol)
C – the above file that I downloaded and have no idea if this is the file that could be missing, and I’ve know idea how to get it into my CPanel if it is the file that I need!

Hi, here is also a screenshot that shows that the file is defiantly missing:
(I just tried yet again to get it working)

    Maxmind DB file doesn’t exist

Am I the only one who is having this problem? Why has it occurred? Surely the files should be there as I haven’t deleted anything and I’ve re-installed it twice, once from the link on the Amazon.co.uk, and once from the www.remarpro.com site – Like I say, it seems like such a great plugin and really has the potential to do all that I need it to do – the moment it is working correctly I will be soooooooo grateful and can proceed with my affiliate site

Thank you for assistance in these issues

    Sherry

You’re not the only one – I get exactly the same message:

“ERROR – The file used to fetch country details to enable geo-targetted links doesn’t have read permissions. Please give recursive read/write permissons to:/home/davidr32/public_html/aic/wp-content/uploads/amazon-associates-link-builder/GeoLite2-Country.mmdb. In case you are still facing the issue, please change download folder in Site Wide Settings section on this page.”

I have given “777” recursively to all folders below “uploads” and also created a separate “amazon” folder at domain root level with “777” and still get the message.

When I change the downloads folder to the folder I created at root level it seems to just ignore it and give the same message as above.

    Resolution would be appreciated

    David

It seams like the plugininstaller will not download or install the GeoLite2-Country.mmdb file, if there are no propper rights during the plugin installation.

Just got to your “/wp-content/uploads/amazon-associates-link-builder/” folder and dwonload the GeoLite2 file from his original location:

    wget https://geolite.maxmind.com/download/geoip/database/GeoLite2-Country.tar.gz

Unpack it, change user and group to the one of your webserver, give propper rights

and it wwoks, at least in my case.
