Max image dimensions not working?

When I set max height to zero or a very high number as suggested below the field, to prevent resizing in that direction, the image is resized but the height gets resized to.
I expected the image to get cropped but it doesn’t happen.
Are my expectations wrong or am I doing something wrong?
