• I’m actually writing this on behalf on a friends site: https://www.themirroredbedcompany.com

It’s a store, built on WordPress and ShopperPress. It’s been running absolutely fine for a few months, but suddenly 2 days ago, everything slowed down massively. The site still kind of works, but each page takes minutes to load, and sometimes she gets a 500 error notice. The top cause for this seems to be permissions: I’ve checked them, and they’re all correct. Nothing new, no plugin has recently been added. The only plugins installed are:
    Akismet
    Facebook Like-Facebook Share
    Keyword statistics
    Official StatCounter Plugin
    Quick Cache
    Stallion WordPress SEO

All plugins have been tested, turning them off and on, to see if they affected the speed of the site, but there’s no change.

I’m stumped! I have no idea what could be causing this, and no idea even where to start looking. Anyone got any suggestions as to possible causes, actions to try etc?

My friend is going frantic, as this is her livelihood, and she’s losing business as I write this! Any advice appreciated!

    Many thanks.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Plugins, yes.
Twenty Eleven – it’s a store, not a blog, so it wouldn’t work with that theme at all anyway.
Resetting by FTP, I’ll give it a try, thanks.

That wasn’t a theme suggestion. It’s part of the basic troubleshooting process.

Yes, I understand that. But because it’s a store, none of the products will load or appear in Twenty Eleven, resulting in it loading really quickly anyway. TE is incompatible with ShopperPress.

Then there really isn’t a great deal we can do here to help. No plugin should be “incompatible” with the current default WordPress theme. Try posting on the ShopperPress forums: https://shopperpress.com/support/

No, I think you misunderstand. The TE theme works, and works fine, BUT, because the site is a store, and shows products etc, and TE isn’t set up like that, then when the TE theme is set up, the store doesn’t show up. Hence, it’s “incompatible”, by which I don’t mean it doesn’t work, I mean it’s pointless for the purposes of testing, as we can’t see what we want to see or check the speed of loading when it doesn’t load!

Trust me, it’s not the theme. The theme worked fine for months, and nothing’s been changed or added to it.

Also Esmi, please don’t say things like “we can’t help you here”. Someone indeed may be able to help, and remarks like that may discourage others from offering their advice. I need all the advice I can get LOL.

Have you tried changing the permalink settings back to the default and deleting the .htaccess file?

In my experience, the biggest culprit for 500 errors is something wonky with .htaccess file… if it’s having trouble with redirects, it could also explain the slowdown.

Thanks Kionae, will give it a try…
