Massive 404 errors in logs

    I am seeing a very large number of 404 errors in the Itheme logs for the following files. This started happening on 11-07-2014:

    sitemap_index.xml

    post-sitemap.xml

    Googling around I see that it might be caused because WordPress SEO by Yoast is generating these files on the fly. A fix I see is to add an exception in the Browser Cache section of W3 Total Cache. However I checked that and it had already been added by one of the plugins, not me, and obviously is not helping the issue. Here is that exception:

    [a-z0-9_\-]*sitemap[a-z0-9_\-]*\.(xml|xsl|html)(\.gz)?

    How do I fix this? I am also getting two email reports a day. Is that also related to this?

    An Internet search brought up a fix:

    “Sometimes resetting the permalink structure will quickly solve a 404 error from a recent change to your installation. Go to Admin > Settings > Permalinks and click save without altering anything.”
