masking the wp-login.php filename

Is it possible to rename the wp-login.php file and the site and login pages would work as designed? If not what are the caveats.

I see there’s a plugin that redirects requests for the wp-login.php, but I’m wondering what the implications are for renaming the file wp-login.php.
