I do hope I can explain my query here, I have the latest edition of WP Mail SMTP which works brilliantly via Gmail.

As my website contact form sends an email to my email address my question is that if it is obvious spam / phishing etc can I mark the email as spam in Gmail or will that show my email as spam as opposed to the spammers email? I hope this makes some sense.

  • Hi @last-ten,

Thanks for reaching out and I apologize for the delay in getting back to you.

However, I’m not so clear on your question.

When you get some time, can eyou please share some more details?

If you can share a screenshot or an example also, that would help. (Please protect any private and sensitive information)

Thanks, and please let me know ??

Hi Nukak, thank you for your help, what I need to know is when I am in my personal Gmail account and have received a message from my WP contact page which is spam or unwanted, when I mark it as spam in Gmail, am I marking :-

1 – My personal sent to from SMTP (Gmail address as Spam)? Lastten @ Gmail.com

2 – The offending spammers email address? Spammer @ spamemail.com

Who will Gmail report as Spam? My (send to) email? or the obvious spammers senders email?

Sorry but I am struggling to explain this correctly, hope this makes a bit more sense Nukak.

    Hi @last-ten,

Thanks so much for the clarification. That’s a great question.

When you mark the email as spam, Gmail reports the email address that’s set up on your site as the sender. If you have WP Mail SMTP set up and the Force from Email option enabled, then the email address you have set up on WP Mail SMTP will be marked as the spammer.

To combat spam on your forms, what you’ll want to do is stop it at the source, which is the forms on your site. Stopping spam before it can be submitted will stop WordPress and WP Mail SMTP from processing it. This not only stops spam from landing in your email, it also helps prevent your hosting account from running unnecessary processes, which can affect your resource usage.

Check with the developer of your form software. Often they will have specific recommendations on how to stop spam from being submitted. For instance, WPForms has several built-in methods of mitigating spam:

I hope this helps! Thanks ??
