Marking real users as spam after upgrade

    We’ve been using the Stop Spammer login without any issues, however after upgrading to WP 3.8.1 we are now finding that lots of real users are being blocked; the main reasons being cached bad ip and Askimet.

    We are currently on version 4.3 of the plugin and of course will upgrade to the latest version of the plugin, I was just wondering however if you could advise what the main cause of our problem could be.

    Is it likely that our current version of the plugin isn’t working proprerly with WordPress 3.8, or could there be something up with our configuration that is making users look like spammers.

    Any advice with this would be very greatly appreciated.

  • Akismet blocks users based on IP address. It is usually the most up to date of all the lists. If a user is being blocked with a reason of Akismet, I think that they may have been reported as spam somewhere. Some operators report comments they don’t like as spam, which is wrong. It is not for punishing a user that you don’t like or agree with.

    The cached bad ip addresses are harder to check. The Beta version expires the cache quicker so that users can be rechecked. There is a logging option you can turn on (don’t leave it on for long). You can use this to find the original cause of a user being in the bad cache.
