• I’m not sure if the MU Domain Mapping plugin was designed to do this or not. Anyone have instructions on how to point a subdomain to a subdomain?

    1) I have WordPress 3.1.1 setup at g0tt.info. It is configured for MU.
    2) I created a blog there https://gottmilk.g0tt.info which appears to be working fine.
    3) I also own https://igottch.com and have a subdomain there of https://gottmilk.igottcha.com which I want to point to https://gottmilk.g0tt.info

I’ve followed the instructions at https://bit.ly/9PzR0v to configure the MU Domain Mapping plugin. Of course I’ve had to modify some of the instructions since this tutorial is a little outdated. I am currently stuck on step four. Not sure how to proceed to map a subdomain to a subdomain.

Also, if this is helpful, I have shared hosting at hostgator.

    Per this:

When mapping a domain, (like ‘example.com’) your users must create an A record in their DNS pointing at that IP address. They should use multiple A records if your server uses more than one IP address. If your user is mapping a hostname of a domain (sometimes called a “subdomain”) like https://www.example.com or blog.example.com it’s sufficient to create a CNAME record pointing at their blog url (NOT IP address).

I think you CAN do it. Just put in the domain as blog.whatever.com instead of whatever.com and see what happens?

I change the A record of the igottcha.com “gottmilk” subdomain to point to 174.120.139.90 and after a few hours https://gottmilk.igottcha.com/ seem to be resolving. However I’m getting a “webpage is not found” error when I go to https://gottmilk.igottcha.com/

I’m pretty sure it has something to do with my not being able to figure out how to configure the “Domain Mapping” area of the MU Domain Mapping plugin. In 3.1.1 there is now a “Search Domains” area that doesn’t show anything listed, and a “Site ID” field that isn’t in any of the tutorials that I’ve read (can’t find an updated tutorial for 3.1.1) so I can’t quite figure out what to put there.

If I had to take a ‘guess’ I would say I would put “2” for the “Site ID” and then put the gottmilk.igottcha.com in the area below it with “primary domain” checked.

So I went with my educated guess but that didn’t improve anything. Got any pointers for me?

    A note regarding my experimentation.

    * When I put “2” for the “Site ID” and put gottmilk.igottcha.com in the area below it with “primary domain” checked, then neither https://gottmilk.g0tt.info nor https://gottmilk.igottcha.com resolve.

    * However if I delete that entry then https://gottmilk.g0tt.info once again resolves in all it’s untapped glory ??

Ok so I’m trying all sorts of things now. Read over the instruction at wordpress-mu-domain-mapping installation and it tuned me into domain parking since I’m using cPanel.

So in addition to my other A-name solution I also tried to park https://gottmilk.igottcha.com and have it forward to https://gottmilk.g0tt.info. Now since that didn’t work I also tried to create the gottmilk subdomain in cPanel and then go to the Domain Mapping plugin configuration to “map” “Site ID” 2 and have the Primary domain for that be https://gottmilk.g0tt.info/

Ok, so well it made sense to me but now I’m getting an error that says “Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.” … Doesn’t take rocket science for me to figure that I’m hitting this thing too hard from too many directions and have simple gotten myself stuck.

    Help ! ??

the plugin actually has not really changed.

Go to the SUB site that you want to map. It’s easier than doing it from the network admin area.

Ok well that was a relief. When you said “Go to the SUB site that you want to map” I started thinking about that for a while. Going over the various ways, over the last three days, that I’ve tried to do exactly what you are saying here.

You see, over the last three days I’ve thought to myself that there should be a “Domain Mapping” submenu when logged in as something other than the Network Admin. So, repeatedly, I have “admin” in the upper right hand corner (which btw I had changed to wpadmin) and have scrolled down through all of the menus meticulously looking for ‘anything’ related to domain mapping. And I couldn’t find anything.

I repeated “Go to the SUB site that you want to map” in my head a couple more times and thought to myself, “ok well lets try just going to https://gottmilk.g0tt.info/ and clicking on the “login” link there.

Lo and behold wouldn’t you know there is a domain mapping link if you look at it from that direction? <sigh> … And after the fact I found out that you can get to it as well from the that aforementioned “Admin” area also. But there is an extra step. I have to click on “My Sites” in the upper left hand side and then click on “Dashboard” for the site in question. <can I have another sigh here?> ??

Thank you Mrs. Andrea_r . Today your WordPress Fu was strong.

Heh. Yeah, it’s a lot of new terminology to take in!

If it’s working now, go ahead and mark this resolved, so we know you’re good! ??

Ooops sorry, didn’t think of looking for that little drop down on the side there. Got it!
