So, I have a Multisite Network setup for a client with 5 sites on it in subdirectory format:

    domain.com
    domain.com/events
    domain.com/training
    domain.com/online
    domain.com/owner

    I need to map:

    domain.com/owner to theowner.com

From everything I’ve been reading and researching, it appears that I should be able to do this no problem with the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin that I’ve been using, however it isn’t working. I have setup the A record for theowner.com and it redirects to domain.com, so it’s pointed right, but for some reason WordPress isn’t picking it up.

I am currently using Flywheel for my hosting and they are of the opinion that I should be converting this to sub-domains in order to make the domain mapping work. I have added the domains for the site into their domain management utility as well, so I’m not sure why this isn’t work. I have another server with them running subdirectory install and it is working no problem, so it just seems like there is something I’m missing but I’m not sure what that might be.

What do you mean WP isn’t picking it up? You added the domain into /wp-admin/network/settings.php?page=dm_domains_admin with the right site number and everything?

    That is correct…

    Site ID: 2
    Domain: theowner.com
    Primary: yes

Right now when I type in “theowner.com”, I get redirected to domain.com. It’s like WordPress doesn’t realize the MU Domain Mapping plugin is installed which seems really weird to me. I also have no redirection plugins or anything turned on at the moment.

Can you provide the real domains?

I have setup the A record for theowner.com and it redirects to domain.com, so it’s pointed right

That isn’t exactly right. It should SHOW what’s on domain.com, not redirect. That is the URL should remain theowner.com

    Ipstenu,

Sorry, I forgot to respond to close this up. After hammering the tech support at my host for a while they clued in that they had a 301 Redirect setup for all domains:

The 301 redirect was coming from our configuration,
as for all sites on Flywheel (except subdomain
multisite) we redirect to the primary domain. This
is the correct behavior, even for subdirectory based
mulitsite, but in this case you’re also mapping
    domains so that’s not ideal.
