I just received this error message when I opened my WordPress website to perform some routine maintenance:

The last rules update for the Wordfence Web Application Firewall was unsuccessful. The last successful update check was December 11, 2019 12:59 am, so this site may be missing new rules added since then. You may wait for the next automatic attempt at February 20, 2020 5:11 am or try to Manually Update by clicking the “Manually Refresh Rules” button below the Rules list.

I tried pressing the Manually Update link in this message but I can’t find a Manually Refresh Rules button. FWIW, I’m using the free version of WordFence v7.4.6 with WordPress 5.3.2-en. Please advise.

  • Hi @idealynx,

The button is located under Wordfence -> All Options -> Rules, for example: https://i.imgur.com/PzmYCT0.png

If you press that button, are the rules able to update?

Thanks, Dave. I tried that, but this is the error message I’m getting:

    Rule Update Failed
No rules were updated. Please verify you have permissions to write to the /wp-content/wflogs directory.

Here are the sharing permission on my Mac:
Name: (unknown) / Privileges: Read & Write
Name: (unknown) / Privileges: Read only
Name: everyone / Privileges: Read only

I also tried changing the permission for that folder, but I’m getting this error message:

The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission.

For what it’s worth, these are the exact same permission settings for my other WordPress websites with the WordFence plugin and none of them have this problem.

It does seem like Wordfence is missing the permission to move/modify files in that folder.

Can you try deleting the folder /wp-content/wflogs/ and retrying updating the rules?

    Yes, that worked! Thanks, Dave.
