    Hi,

I am trying to update the rules manually with admin access but it keeps failing with error message “No rules were updated. Please verify you have permissions to write to the /wp-content/wflogs directory”.
How can I update the rules?

    Kind Regards,
    Lily

Hello @amiya1672 and thanks for reaching out to us!

Can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

    Thanks!

You are about to enter Wordfence spin control hell. It is everyone else’s fault but theirs..

2 years and this problem just keeps growing. When will you guys address it properly in code rather than handling it in support forums?

Thanks for sending that diagnostic @amiya1672

It looks like your site is connecting correctly to our noc4 server. If you could, using FTP or a file manager, navigate to the /wp-content/wflogs/ folder and check the last date modified for the rules.php file. If it’s recent, the rules are updating correctly and the plugin is just not seeing it properly.

If the last date modified is a long time ago, back up the wflogs folder and remove it. Then browse to any page on your site and this should recreate the wflogs folder. See if the rules are updating manually then.

Let me know what you find!

@jasonbrogdon I am sorry that you are having issues with the WAF rules updating. I see you opened a separate thread, which is per forum rules, so I thank you! We will assist you there.

    Thanks!

    Hi @wfadam
the rules.php file is old. I have tried the steps that you describe above but still cannot manually update.
should I add the wflogs file that I backup back to my file manager?
And are you able to update the rules from the back end for me?

    Hi @wfadam
Just to be clear, the same error message showed up

When you backed up the wflogs file and removed it, did it repopulate when you visited your site? It should of at least. This should have pulled the latest rules automatically.

Let me know if you see something different. We might have to try something else.

    Thanks!

the file repopulated when I visited my site. But it didn’t automatically pull the latest rules. The file size stayed at zero and when I tried to manually update rules, this error message came up again “No rules were updated. Please verify you have permissions to write to the /wp-content/wflogs directory”.

    Kind Regards,

Just to add more content here. It seems the rule stopped automatically update itself after I cancelled my subscription to wordfence premium. Can you please check this as well (whether the cancellation of the license was done properly)?

That makes me think something in the tables might be corrupt from the downgrade to free.

A complete re-install of Wordfence might be a good step. It’s always best to make a backup of the site and database before installing/removing plugins, just to be safe.

Additionally, you can backup your Wordfence settings via the Export option. Navigate to Wordfence > Tools > Import/Export Options and click Export. You can also take note of the current Whitelisted URLs you have in Wordfence > Firewall > All Firewall Options > Whitelisted URLs as these are NOT included in the Import/Export, and will be lost during the re-install.
Here is what is exported: https://www.wordfence.com/help/tools/import-export/
During the export, you will be given a long string of text. Keep this safe, you’ll need it in a few minutes.

After that, enable the option to Delete Wordfence tables and data on deactivation in All Options > General Wordfence Options. You will want to remember to disable this after you reinstall Wordfence again.

After you enable that option, you can deactivate Wordfence from the Plugins area of your site, then delete it. Next, from the plugins area, search for and re-install Wordfence like normal.

It will be like setting Wordfence up for the first time. You will need to enter an email address, and then go into Tools > Import/Export Options and paste that string of text into the Import Wordfence Options field and click the button there.

The firewall will be in Learning Mode by default for 7 days. I would recommend switching this to Enabled and Protected as soon as possible.

Let me know if this resolves it!

    Thanks!

    Hi @wfadam
    Seems like all good now.
Passed the learning mode and is all working at the moment.

    THanks!
