• Are there any pros or cons comparing installing WP manually vs. selecting the install be done by the host service?

Obviously, one is level of effort. Will the installs be maintained differently (e.g. monitor when new release is recommended/required)?

  • Times change, obviously, but I stopped using automated installs provided by hosting companies (or software packages that do it for them) after having trouble updating WordPress and especially problems reinstalling. I’ve even seen some weird options selected that caused me problems later. Admittedly, that was THEN and this is NOW.

I still recommend doing the standard WordPress install by downloading from www.remarpro.com and using the /wp-admin/install.php approach described in the 5 minute install. Mainly, because you learn important things that will help you debug issues later. Mostly where key files and settings within files are.

Pro: If it goes well then it can be quicker than a manual install.
Con: If it doesn’t go well and your hosting providers cannot help you then finding support might be a bit tricky, depending on the error message produced by the automatic tool.
