Hi, I have to do a manual install of WordPress for a friend. She already has a site up and running but she doesn’t want to keep it. When I FTP to the server, I see a list of folders, files and shortcuts as follows :

FOLDERS : .cpanel, .cphorde, .htpasswds, .pki, .trash, etc, index, logs, mail, public_ftp, public_html, ssl, tmp

FILES : .bash_logout, .bash_profile, .bashrc, .contactemail, .ftpquota, .lastlogin, .zshrc, cpbackup-exclude.conf

    SHORTCUTS : access-logs, www

I don’t know what most of these are. My plan was to delete everything in the public_html folder and install WordPress there, leaving everything else as it is. Is this correct, or can I delete all the other stuff as well?

Don’t mess with stuff outside of public_html

That depends on how the website is configured.

    My advice is,

    1. First of all make a backup of all the files, in case something goes wrong you will have something to go back to.

    2.

My plan was to delete everything in the public_html folder and install WordPress there, leaving everything else as it is.

    Yes, do exactly that.

    3. Read this guide on Installing WordPress so you don’t miss any step during the installation.

    Good luck!!

Thank you Steve and thank you Edwin. Really appreciate it. With your generous advice I hope I won’t need luck ??

Be safe when you will work outside public_html folder

Hi Guys, I’ve read a few guides about performing the manual install. Most of them mention the need to modify the wpconfig.php file to include unique authentication keys.

This step isn’t mentioned in the www.remarpro.com instructions. Is it necessary?

If you do not set those keys, WP will automatically create them.
