Manual install and still cannot access my site.

    I did a manual reinstall using the steps outlined here: Update WordPress

    I used Filezilla. I renamed the folder plugins to plugins.old. I then deleted the wp-includes and wp-admin folders. I then added them via Filezilla using a download of WordPress 3.9.1.

    Next, I uploaded the wp-content folder using “Overwrite” function.

    Last, I renamed the plugins.old folder back to plugins. However, after following this step by step I still cannot access my Worpress dashboard, nor the site. I get the following message:

    Fatal error: Call to a member function register_handler() on a non-object in /home/kreativekristi/cherokeemission.org/wp-includes/media.php on line 2003

    Please help!

    Here are a few potential solutions, I hope this helps!

    1) Try re-uploading all the files via FTP just in case they failed to transfer the first time.
    2) Are your htaccess and wp-config.php still intact? If not, add them back to the installation.
    3) Try restoring a backup of your original site and then do the one-click update (is there a particular reason you need to do the manual update)?
    4) Try commenting out line 2003 in media.php to gain access to wp-admin, then make sure all plugins are deactivated and you can perform another database upgrade.

    Never, ever, edit WordPress core scripts. And do not encourage others to do so. Editing core scripts can bring down your entire site and/or open security holes for hackers to use.

    Sorry, I meant for that to be a temporary change just to get access into wp-admin. Then finish the upgrade and make sure you have the correct files on your live site.

    @accidental techie: why did you carry out a manual reinstall? What version of WordPress were you running previously?

    I had another site hosted at Dreamhost that I had to do a manual update for so I thought perhaps that was the case. I will try to restore a backup and do it through the automatic backup.

    I restored to a 2 week old backup and did the automatic backup. All seems to be OK.
