We are using WordFence on a clients website and couple of days back the WordFence plugin blocked 3 users from accessing the website with the error message:

    Manual block by administrator

We can confirm that none of the admin’s had blocked any IP’s and after a few hours it seems like the issue resolved itself.

I would like to understand what might be causing such an error to display and if there is a way to get around it if it does indeed occur again.

Hi @adrianalw, thanks for reaching out.

Manual block by administrator is given as a reason when manual permanent blocking of an IP has been performed on the Wordfence > Blocking page. I can say this with a high degree of confidence because IPs blocked automatically by Wordfence and using the “Block IP” button on the Live Traffic page are subject to the timeout restrictions set in your Brute Force and Rate Limiting settings, so are only temporary and don’t return the same message.

Aside from all 3 legitimate site visitors being randomly assigned an IP you’ve manually blocked in the past – not impossible but unlikely, there could be an issue with IP detection on your site. Under Wordfence > All Options > General Wordfence Options > How does Wordfence get IPs, make sure your site is detecting the same IP you see on https://www.whatsmyip.org. If it doesn’t, scroll through the options until it does, and remember if your site uses Cloudflare you should always use the “CF-Connecting-IP” option.

Let me know if you find anything else out when taking a look, or need further assistance!

    Thanks,

    Peter.
