mamp error establishing a database connection

after being guided to the https://localhost:8888/wordpress/wp-admin/setup-config.php?step=1 page and entering database name, my user, and pass, I am given the error “error establishing a database connection.”

Tried rewriting my config sample php file and renaming it.

can’t get to the install page

I don’t have a site established.
